Now I’m just as excited as the next spurs fan, more if anything. From after our first preseason game against West Ham, I knew we were going to be a problem for a lot of teams this season, and would cause damage. I’m not surprised by our start. But I was quite surprised, but happy, that literally 99% of pundits didn’t give us a chance in hell, we were getting predicted to finish about 8th maximum.
Anyway, after a great start, are the media getting on the bandwagon and is the hype getting too much?
It feels like article after article - see this latest read (really good btw) from bbc https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/66846293. And the fan forum obviously with all the fawning over Ange.
As I say, I’m excited as the next fam, but when I step back I remember it has only actually been 5 games. I’m just worried that it could affect us and our early underdog/low expectations status, and set us up for a fall, especially with the NLD coming up.
Thoughts?
Is there too much hype? NLD concerns

Wake me up when we’ve actually won something. Oh no wait, I’ll be long dead by then.

We ain’t building Jack. The squad is the squad and all that should matter is trying to win the next game.

Don't agree with this outlook. Winning the next game isn't all that matters. The bigger picture is far more important. Building an identity, a style of play and a strong squad may give you plenty of big wins in the future rather than a win at all costs attitude in a one off game and then fumble around blindly for results after that.
Any team can raise themselves occasionally and play above their skillset but the really good teams play at a consistently high level week in week out (hate that phrase btw) which you will only obtain with a settled side and style of play which will take time.

Yes, it really is. It’s quite literally the whole point of sport.
Besides EVEY season it’s “we’re a team in transition” and I’m really f*cking bored of it.

100% this and I'm surprised Automatic can't see that. If the only thing that mattered was the next game then you'd see every single manager up and down the country changing their tactical approach to suit the next opponent. They don't. They stick to a philosophy, not because they're headstrong and blinkered, but because they believe that, long-term, it will give their team a greater chance of sustainable success. I'd take that every day of the week.
It's the difference between playing your way and eventually seeing the results vs panicking after 70 mins and getting in the mixer fast.
Brighton under Chris Hughton did what they could to stay in the league and there was some really dodgy periods under Potter to start with but they stuck with it and look where they are now based on having a clear way of playing and an recruitment model to suit it. They now win more games than they did back then. Many more. If they hadn't changed they'd still be doing the same thing - defending deep to stay in the division. It worked then and it got them results but they changed things up because it's not just about the next game. It's about the long term vision.
I know what you're getting at Automatic but despite the rhetoric from Ange himself - I can imagine him talking about the next game only to temper expectation a little, he has a plan that stretches beyond the next game. Christ, what kind of manager doesn't have a long term plan? It's utter nonsense that it's the whole point of sport. To not even consider that a doing a 180 degree turn in terms of style brings short term pain for long term gain. How can you not even see that?
THAT's why I'm okay with losing on Sunday because I'm fully on board with the long term vision of the club. You might not want to look any further than the next game but the losses will come and you need to start looking at them as nothing more than a dropped stitch in the tapestry Ange is building. It's crazy to see it any other way.

Ok, well you clearly have much more faith in the process and the club’s vision than I do.

I recognise that Levy is the problem but we've finally got a manager in for me that echoes the same philosophies as Poch and we had some seriously good times back then.
I'm curious as to what makes you lack faith in the current set up besides Levy. We now have a front foot manager with a long term plan and are spending more wisely and future-proofing the club because the 'win now' approach was always doomed to fail. I can't see what else you'd want but a Middle Eastern buy out to become the next City, Chelsea or PSG.
For all his faults, I think Levy has finally got things right whether it's by design or accident.

I defer to big Ange on all issues
"No, no, no, let them go, let them go and enjoy it. My role is not to burst people's bubbles. Let them get excited, let them get ahead of themselves. That's the beauty of being a supporter. They go through enough pain mate, you want to let them enjoy it. If they think we're going to be world beaters then great, that's up to us to match that expectation. Our supporters deserve to have some happiness and enjoy it any way they want to."
people are far too worried about the inevitable come down and "Laugh at Spurs" articles when we lose a game. just enjoy it for what it is, a huge improvement on what we've had the last few years.

It’s not that, I was just questioning why he would be fine if we lose.
For me it will just mean same old Spurs, who never do it when it really matters.

That obsession with 'winning now' is what made us appoint Conte and Jose, in part probably down to a desperation to keep Harry, but it just doesn't work if you don't have the money to win quickly. You have to find another way.
I'm not fine with losing but I am fine with the occasional hiccup on our path to success.

Levy`s vision is regular CL participation and nothing more, any trophies picked up along the way are just a bonus.
Levy is a master at keeping the fans in this operating within our means bubble, the constant pleading of poverty and refusal to ever push the boat out tempers the expectations of many fans and maintains the losers mentality.
The last thing Levy wants is to give the fans a taste for silverware, as they will demand it every season. An elite club mentality creates more headaches for the owners, hence why Levy is content with CL qualification and no more.
Levy out.
