Amrabat

Not going to get carried away as it was a 2nd string Palace side but he was impressive last night and possibly just what we need in midfield.

He covered the ground very well and was solid if unspectacular in possession and kept things moving well. Not every pass needs to be a defence splitter.

Reminded me a bit of Fred without being erratic in possession.

In fairness like Carrick Amrabat offers a calming presence in midfield and wants to be the possession hub of the team and manage flow and tempo. Crucially he knows where to be in defensive transition and where to be to receive. Watch how often he scans for what's over his shoulder and for what's ahead.

This kind of profile has been overlooked by too many United managers.

Ten Hag did want De Jong, I’ve a feeling that if he had the budget he’d have built a decent side by now. Unfortunately it needed a today rebuild.

He did but then decided on bringing in a completely different kind of player.

We've invested enough money under Ten Hag to have built a decent side. I'm not saying we have a bad side but some of the money spent could've been used more sensibly.

Speaking of budgets, he has also potentially wasted money on the likes of Malacia and Antony. Jury is out on Mount although he had a decent 45 minutes last night.

Eth's issue is not only getting the player with the right profile but also making use / clearing out a bloated squad.

Malacia was a pretty cheap punt, young and signed as cover for Shaw. Whether he can kick on and establish himself as a United player is a another question but I wouldn't call his signing a waste of money.

Antony though...

Yeah I do agree, but I don’t think many managers get all of their signings right.

Antony is the only standout as a bad signing imo.

I’m sure he’d have cleared the squad given the choice, wouldn’t he?

I’m interested to see how he does when things are more congested in the centre and he’s being pressed whilst on the half turn.

I'm very excited about what I saw yesterday so maybe take this with a pinch of salt.

I saw signs of what even the likes of VDB could potentially do in his cameo last night.

Yes it was a weakened palace side but it's never seen us play like last night. Hungry players, pressing together, defending together, looking for each other and interchanging like I haven't seen for a long while.

For me the dynamic seemed different. Gore came on and was supported, something other youngsters don't seem to have been.

If the MF is a sign of things to come I can see likes of Antony going up a level (court cases permitting). My thinking this is based on one thing and one thing only, he will be allowed to be a winger. Bare with me here. Yes he is a winger but his biggest asset has been his defensive duties. Throw in the lack of movement around the box and the static state of some players and Incan see the difficulty a winger would have.

With Hojlund up front and a MF if Casemiro and Amrabat you should see a different Antony imo.

If not then yeah he has been a huge waste of money.

He looks like a good signing. Was impressed with him utterly dominating the midfield in the ECLF and was great in the WC.
