How trapped in your job are you?
I had a meeting in London today. Booked it in a few weeks ago. Travelling by train. The meeting isn’t far from Euston.
Got up this morning, got a taxi to the train station, but on the way I checked the weather, it showed solid sun all Fcking day. And I was to be on a train for 5 hours and in a meeting for two. Basically locked away the whole day
So I rang the meeting, moved it to tomorrow, rang my gaffer told him the plan, used my last half a day of holiday (so I’m not feeling that much liberation, actually) and walked the 40 mins home.
Now stood in the garden soaking up the sun feeling very happy with my decision.
Anyone else have control of their life?
Liberation

Ahhh man I loved that age.
If I had my time again I'd work less and spend more time with them at that age, it's probably my biggest regret although we have a very comfortable lifestyle as a result.
My eldest daughter is 15 and I'm lucky to get a high five these days, let alone a hug. Blink and it's gone.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Definitely regret the long hours I work.
But overtime is where I make my money.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Haven’t worked overtime in 15 years
Also children are animals and I say that as a parent
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Aye fair point although the selfish part of me thinks the world deserves my nippy DNA to continue?

Sort of, took redundancy just after the pandemic, tried another couple of jobs but couldn’t stand the bosses so jacked em both.
Done my sums, realised if I cut my cloth accordingly I could manage to live without a traditional income, I’ll still be comfortable when I retire just not loaded. So, I thought I’d rather spend some of the retirement pot now, best decision ever, although if the right job comes along I could be persuaded to go back.
If you think about it, we’re all sold a dud, encouraged to work hard, if you’re successful you can retire at 50.
Many of my age group have either semi or completely retired post covid, then the government depicts us as not doing our bit.

It is called compensation for a reason.
The 'Great Resignation' was a thing though most stats point to employment having returned to pre-covid levels. Think it gave people a chance to reflect and change jobs, make adjustments, consider what is important. Many regret though probably driven by finances and inflation?
The hard reality is many are so maxed out with their nose to the grindstone, commuting, kids, other dependencies that they don't even have the bandwidth for that proper reflection.

early starts and early finishes are great, leaves far more of your day free. especially at winter when 9-5 is almost a vampire shift, leave for work when its dark, get back from work when its dark.

I'm usually like that as the wife goes Edinburgh and Gloucester twice a month. I just remind her that the kids love her more which is why they are excited to see her whilst I make a dash for it.
