Afternoon all. Looks like a straight choice now between Muscat and Clement for the Manager role so who would be our pick?
Whilst I can't say I'm completely familiar with either, from all the things read and heard and looked at it seems there would be pros and cons for either.
In Clement's favour:
He has won 3 titles in a league similar in stature to Scotland and with a club (Brugges) probably on a similar footing to Rangers domestically and in Europe just now.
He also did a good job at Monaco initially, again improving performances and getting them in to the CL places in league standings in his first year. They had a solid second season before a calamitous couple of months at the end of the season which resulted in his sacking.
He appears to have a reputation as a good man manager who got the best out of previously struggling teams to turn them round and win things. His record in Europe was decent. Although there were some pastings from the likes of PSG and City, overall they had a good couple of years.
It feels like Clement would probably be a safer choice in the short term. He would likely restore some structure and get more out of a failing group of players whilst maintaining progress in the Europa League.
The cons however would be:
Despite his league success, he never won a cup in Belgium
He inherited good players at all clubs who just needed structure. He's never had to overhaul a playing style or come in and rebuild a team.
His transfer record is pretty poor in Belgium with most players he signed at both Genk and Brugges being moved on at a loss not long after.
There is a theme of things dropping off after the initial success.
Then there is Muscat. More of a gamble in that like Postecoglou he is coming from a totally different environment and a lot of his success appears to be from carrying on the good work of Ange with solid foundations in place rather than overhauling a squad and implementing a new playing style.
I like that he appears to be an attacking coach
His knowledge of the game here with a reputation for being no nonsense gives him an advantage over Clement.
He's very well thought of by those who have seen his work at close quarters and there's a view he has a lot of potential to have a great career as a Manager.
His knowledge of new markets that have worked elsewhere could provide opportunities to get greater value than we get just now.
Whilst a more immediate risk, the potential longer term might be greater than Clement's safer stable approach.
The cons - how much of his success is down to him and how much of it down to being in roles where everything is set up for him? The only role he went alone with was ironically in Belgium where he was sacked after only a few disastrous months.
His playing style wouldn't be compatible with this group of players so there would be more patience required as we ripped it up to start again.
Personally I'd be comfortable with either. Muscat probably has the potential for a higher ceiling as a Manager but Clement appears to be a pretty solid choice with a track record of winning trophies in a similar environment at a good level. It appears the board are split between the two just now so will be interesting to see how it plays out and what the final decision is based on.
New Manager Preference?

I love Frank though

Part of me does wonder if he has just been unlucky with basket case clubs.

Exactly, he doesn't need another.

With Rangers shortlisting anyone with a bald head and tight beard (ooh err), surely Jason Statham is in with a shout?
Knows his diving 👍🏼

clement is clearly a poor manager given his record at monaco.
lost like 67% of his games.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
His win percentage was over 50%.

If clement plays slow, I'll take Muscat. Fvcking sick of watching us slowly shuffling the ball about outside the opponent's box hoping they fall asleep so we can walk it in.

Most interesting thing for me in all this is "The Board are split"........hence the lack of clarity. Nobody has blown the opposition out of the water during the interview process and paralysis is the result
I remember before Ange was appointed and after DD had met him he made a comment along the lines of "We don't need to interview anybody else". On the debit side was the Howe fvck up and the time wasted before he backed out. Lessons learned I hope

Clement feels like a GvB type of appointment, football will probably be quite similar.
Muscat you're hoping for the Ange bounce
if I was a Rangers fan I'd try and get someone in, in the short term and assess again in the summer, I think that squad could get another manager the bullet before the summer
