Following the Beckham special on Netflix , we now had the Rooney documentary on TV last night which was very well done I thought.
It's easy to forget just how blessed we were especially during the Fergie years with so many legends.
Which makes it even all the more painful when you consider where we are today as a club and what we've had to watch over the past few years.
In the subject of Wayne Rooney , definitely a top 10 Manchester United legend of all time in my opinion.
Absolutely world class during his prime years at Old Trafford and his partnership with Ronaldo and Tevez during the 2007-2008 season was literally out of this world.
The club's all-time top scorer as well
Controversial character of course in both his personal and professional life but his overall talent as a footballer and all the major honours he won at United will not be matched for a very long time at Old Trafford... Certainly not by anybody in the current squad.
To Wazza

I find it impossible to do an all time Utd 11.
Rooney n RVN v Cole n Yorke v Cantona Hughes
Beckham v Ronaldo
Irwin v Evra
Rio, Vidic, Stam, Brucey, Pally
Even Schmeichel v VDS isn't as one sided as many think. VDS won the lot with us also and broke the club clean sheet record I seem to recall.
The only nailed players for me:
G Nev
Keano
Scholes
Giggs
The rest is debatable and down to personal opinion and also formation.

When you say all time, did you mean in your lifetime?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah. The guy who started it off was an Arsenal fan and he mentioned in his lifetime.
I can't include Charlton, Best and Law as I never saw them play although my Dad did and he never shuts up about them. Denis was his favourite of the 3 as it happens. I reckon mine would have been Best had I been around then.
My Dad's Father (who I never met) swears blind that Duncan Edwards was better than all 3 of them though.
We really have been blessed with some unbelievable players at this club, probably more so than Liverpool actually despite their dominance for 2 decades.

I actually wouldn't put Rooney in all time Man United 11 from my era despite him being all time Man United goalscorer.
This would be mine:
Schmeichel
G. Neville Vidic Ferdinand Evra
Beckham Keane Scholes Giggs
Ronaldo Cantona
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Irwin gets in ahead of both fullbacks

As a neutral, Keane would be the very first name on my team sheet.
Absolute nailed on starter and captain.

Not sure how you can choose between Robbo and Keane tbh, but Scholes has to be in there.
The three would be an amazing trio.

All time United 11’s obviously need to include Charlton & Best. Then there’s more of a debate around certain other players (Robson, Law etc). Imagine prime Giggs & Best running at people on each wing? But those players are before my time as well, so I think I’d have to go:
—————Schmeichel
Irwin—Stam—-Ferdinand—Evra
———Beckham—-Keane
Ronaldo——Scholes——Giggs
—————Rooney*
*Could flip a coin on Wayne or Ruud.

Both great players for United but choosing between them is suprisingly easy.

Back to the OP and documentary - enjoyed the programme and thought it was well balanced - Rooney and Colleen came out of it well

Ok, couldn't help myself. Trying to think of a team that could legitimately be considered an "all time" United team. Had to consider things like appearances, individual honours, goal scoring records and trophies won. Also took a small liberty with Keane's position given he did play there a fair bit later on and in the modern game might even play there more regularly:
--------------Schmeichel
Neville-Ferdinand-Keane-Irwin
Best---Scholes---Robson---Giggs
---------------Charlton
----------------Law
Three Ballon d'Or winners, a World Cup winner, all of them won at least one European Cup (bar Robson), some of the most decorated players in English football history, goal scoring records that were held or rank highly, huge appearance numbers and trophies galore.
Probably the only really contentious one is Robson ahead of Rooney but the formation/positions dictate that.

Him and Coleen never scared to talk about it so they said in the documentary but then we were left wanting Coleen's pov on him slipping out to meet Grannies.
The documentary was good. Made me realise that he peaked so early though. When he said he was the best player in the World at 18/19 he probably wasn't far off. Don't think he was ever again close to that being reality.
