.........we don't have the right guy for the job, and let's be honest, we never have done since SAF left. We can go on about individual players not performing, toxic atmospheres, takeover bids etc etc, but it all comes down to the guy in charge of the team.
And ultimately, that process is a bit of a lottery, although we have probably not helped ourselves much in playing that lottery.
Moyes - a fair choice, but ultimately out of his depth.
LVG - understandable choice to steady the ship, but past his best and style of play a bit turgid.
JM - a proven winner, but another past his best and just not the right fit. Once again style of play not great.
OGS - great as interim, understandable they give him the job but a case of heart ruling head and out of his depth in the end
RR - a strange choice as interim, didn't feel right at all.
ETH - a fair choice, many problems, some of his own making, some not, but ultimately, it just doesn't feel right, he looks like he is out of his depth and not coping at all.
Having gone through all these managers, it naturally makes us wary of not wanting to make the 'wrong choice' again, or being too hasty in dismissing someone, but we still have to recognise when it is not working out. Sometimes it just doesn't work out - ETH seemed a great choice, great credentials at a slightly lower level and ready for the step up, but if the signs are there, we have to accept it and move on. He has gone from trying to resolve problems, to being part of the problems.
There aren't many very good managers out there. In the EPL, Pep and Klopp stand out. Arteta is showing signs that he may make it also, but the next few years will confirm. Howe is finding out how tough it can at the top and once again time will tell.
Poch is prob slightly below the very top level. The likes of Unai and Ang have made good starts and are current 'flavours of the month', but would need to show they can maintain that and take to another level. That is just a selection.
But it can take clubs years to find the right manager, and I think we need to accept that there is no magic formula to that and we may need to go through a few more before we find him. There is always a bit of risk involved, and I would not be averse to picking someone with potential and viewed as a bit risky (I don't know who, but just of that profile) - if you have got it, you have got it, and you will naturally fit into the job. ETH just looks so uncomfortable in the role.
All managers deserve a decent chance to settle in a role, but our recent history shouldn't make us scared of knowing when it's right and time to move on. Personally, I would just love someone who can get us playing decent football - I look at so many teams and think, win or lose, they are a decent watch - I can't remember when I felt that with our team. It's sad that we can't even manage that.
It's quite simple................

I'd give the focker the season now.
I'd be telling him that he has that time to find his playing style, don't even worry about top 4... Just focus on getting the players to 100% buy into what you are doing.

If ETH hasn't got us playing in a certain way by now, do you think he is going to find it over the next few months? It's almost gone beyond that - the mentality is all wrong. We can berate the players as long as we want, but ETH has lost them, I think ETH has lost himself. I don't doubt his efforts, I feel sorry for him, but that doesn't help him, but I can't see a way out under him.

Possibly, yes. Hence why I gave that opinion.
We are going to have a 2nd half of the season playing mostly one game a week. A stark difference to the insane schedule we have had since ETH came (lots of cups, winter world cup etc).
I'm not making excuses for him and have been quite "ETH out" for a while... But maybe this is the correct time to give him a chance to redeem himself... It's not like there is an abundance of managers queing at the door.

Munich toyed with United last night. They never got out of 2nd gear. They didnt need to. They had already won the group. They just turned up and made up the numbersand went through the motions. Yet one shot on target from the LFB is all we could muster. And we finished bottom of that group. LOL.
I dont think ETH has playing style to offer without it been developed and applied through out all levels at the club by a proper DofF and coaching programme. At most United will win games by rare individual moments pof worth by our creative players on the pitch.. Garnacho, Rashford, Bruno, etc or McT doing his thing.. or our new CF finally coming good eventually.

I don't think it is as simple as that.
What do people think Pep would need to do to turn this club back into one of the elite? He wouldn't be doing it with the current set up that's for sure.
If you actually take a good look at Ten Hag's signings he's actually not got his main choices at all really.
It's also not easy to offload players due to their contracts. People will say just take the loss and pay them out, but we all know the Glazers won't and don't operate like that.

I feel that he will still be faithful to the likes of Onana and Antony, and while he still has Bruno as captain, that will hurt ETH. I guess he has little choice but to be faithful to them.
I know Bruno gets a fair bit of stick on here, but for me, he has still been one of our better performers, but not captain material, and that has hindered him. A big deal would be made out of taking the captaincy away, but for the sake of the player, and the team, I think it's a decision ETH needs to make. And in strange twist of fate, it may be Maguire he needs to give it back to.
Whatever you think of his ability, Maguire has shown great mental strength in getting his place back - if ETH seems him as first choice now, he should give him the captaincy - let's face it, there aren't many other options.
But ultimately ETH is relying on players which he has chosen, and they haven't turned out to be good choices

ETH seems pretty cut throat to me... Dropping the likes of Rashers, Varane, Ronaldo, Sancho etc
You could argue that it's easier when they are not his signings... But Antony has been dropped before, Hojlund too.
Let's see over the coming months... I'd like to see a lot more of Mainoo and think that will happen. Hopefully we get something out of this season, even if it's just a more solid style of play.

You see, I don't think it's simple at all. In fact it's very complicated.

I think everyone is excited by Mainoo and what he could be - but it's getting to a stage where there is so much expectation on a young kid, I just hope we don't ruin him.
I would just like to see us create a decent number of chances and hopefully see what Hojlund can really do. Martial as an alternative is just typical of the player we have at UTD - flatters to deceive and ultimately not the type of player to rely on in a battle.
ETH is his own man and makes strong decisions - I;m just not sure they have been the right ones

Squad mentality needs to be looked at first. They quit as soon as the going gets tough and the manager gets the blame. You need to remove the bad apples even if it means they go for free and you have less to spend in the transfer market.
Then rather looking for superstars instead look for value in the market.
