In the dark ages, when a tribe went to war, mainly Celts versus Saxons, the men would form a line, in front of them there was a holy man who would curse the other side. Behind him the King, expected to lead his troops, then the army. All would be painted their colours to make sure they didn't kill their own.
As they waited they were afraid, some would run off to relieve themselves.
But then they would begin to sing their battle songs, louder and louder to give fear to the other side, courage to themselves. The man next to him who he did not like, now loved, a band of brothers ready to die for each other.
When we go to the match we wear our colours, sing our battle songs to
give heart to our kings on the pitch, at one with the other fans.
After the match we are disappointed or exhilarated, but when we get home and we sit down to our meal or is forgotten, or should be. Nothing worth fighting for.
Football is a game, the best game in the world imo, but a game.

Aye, lose and we'll feel bad, at least a while. And going to our beds on Christmas night, for years to come, would you really trade the presents and Christmas pudding for that one win, just one win over the Christmas period to tell our opponents that they may play the game, but they'll never take the three points!!
