Winter Solstice

As House says, it is pointless nowadays. It was introduced as a "temporary measure" in WW1 with the idea that it would increase productivity as people could work for longer.
For most people in the UK the "change of clocks" makes little difference, theoretically gaining or losing an hour's sleep once each year.
No big problem apart from the fact that if you forget to change your clocks you may be an hour early or late for work on Monday.
On vessels at sea it used to be more complicated for navigational reasons on east to west or west to east ocean transits. That was before satellite navigation when the use of a sextant, nautical almanacs, Norries Tables and a clear sky was essential to establish your position without sight of land.
There were other aids such as Loran and Decca but area coverage was limited and varied.
Now my phone can tell me instantly where I am within a few metres.
Navigating Officers now probably think that spherical trigonometry is something to do with the shape of their testicles.

It's not pointless, it's a question of trying to have children going to and back from school in daylight.

It used to cost us £40 a game to put our flood lights on and that was 20 years ago

It used to be for farmers...but have you seen the lights they have on tractors now

Why would farmers care if they don't have to clock in, regularly get up well before dawn anyway, and can independently decide when to feed the cows, plough the fields, or take the sheep out to graze?

I thought it was on Thursday, 21st Dec

It is actually at about 0330 on Fri 22nd Dec.

According to the weather forecast, the LEAST cloud cover at Stonehenge between now and 1100 is 89% although any rain should have stopped before sunrise. Nothing worse than a soggy druid!
