Zion Suzuki

Remember that Japanese goalkeeper that we nearly bought.

I don't know how good the Turkish GK is, but watching Suzuki playing for Japan team in Asian cup now, he is just like Onana, punching the ball to the middle of his goal for the rebound.

Honestly I don't know what we see in him that makes him a good GK, even from the bench. That tells something about either our scout system or ETH's judgement. Imagine we have Onana A and Onana B in our team right now.

For the best. The 'humour' around his name would have been nauseating.

With all due respect to the OP I spend enough time worrying about the players we have signed let alone those we didn't!

Japan Vietnam 4-2
3 shots on target - 2 goals conceded
one of the goal was him punch the ball in front of the striker

Japan - Iraq 0-2 (now in 70th min)
3 shots on target - 2 goals conceded
one of the goal was him punch the ball in front of the striker

That's Onana-esque performance

Nice to see a bit of consistency.

This is karma for how they treated DDG

People may have used the eye test to decide Onana always looked dodgy, and they may put forward examples that show "he made mistakes". But I'd put it to you all that performance data over several years of top flight football and several Champions League campaigns has more weight. That data tells you that Onana has been statistically a better than average shot stopper, as well as an elite distributor. In other words, the mistakes that according to received wisdom he's always been prone to have been pretty infrequent.

So what we have now is either a statistical blip, in which case we can expect him to revert to usual levels and the howlers will happen much less frequently, or he immediately got much worse after joining United. He wouldn't be the first player whose abilities were dissolved the moment he arrived in Carrington. Either way, I don't really see buying Onana as a poorly reasoned recruitment decision.

Gets himself all revved up and it impacts his performance.
