AFCON / AFC Cup updates

We have got to the business end of both tournaments group stages. So far it has been quite goal-laden, with Africa averaging 2.7 goals a game and Asia slightly less with 2.33. There have been a few shocks along the way, especially in Africa with most of the fancied teams mis-firing and still needing a result. Both Japan and South Korea have stumbled in their second games.

As a reminder, the top 2 in each group plus the 4 best 3rd placed teams progress.

(current point tally in brackets. Teams in bold already through. Teams in italics already eliminated).

-----------------------African Cup of Nations-----------------------
GROUP A - Today 5pm
Equatorial Guinea thump Cote d'Ivoire to top the group.
Nigeria go through in second.
Cote d'Ivoire end on 3 points and a minus 3 goal difference. They must wait and see if they get one of the 4 best 3rd place places.
Guinea-Bissau are out.

GROUP B - Tonight 8pm
Cape Verde finish unbeaten on 7 points.
Egypt sneak through without winning a game, with 3 points.
Ghana only have 2 points and need a miracle. Their -1 gd will probably not come into the count.
Mozambique also finish on 2 points but are out on GD.

GROUP C - Tuesday 5pm
Senegal top the group with maximum points.
Cameroon come through a dramatic game to sneak 2nd.
Guinea are through as one of the best 3rd placed teams.
Gambia go out.

GROUP D - Tuesday 8pm
Angola (4) vs Burkina Faso (4)
Algeria (2) vs Mauritania (0)

The top two fight it out for top spot with both through, while Algeria can still get in the automatic places but know a draw is enough to progress. Mauritania can get 3rd at best, but a win does put them through.

GROUP E - Wednesday 5pm
South Africa (3) vs Tunisia (1)
Namibia (3) vs Mali (4)

This looked a hard to call group, and Namibia's shock win over fancied Tunisia really turned it up. All 4 can still qualify in the top 2, so the last games should be nervy affairs. Mali are through, South Africa could lose 4-0 and still qualify if Namibia lose, and Tunisia go through with a win.

GROUP F - Wednesday 8pm
Tanzania (1) vs DR Congo (2)
Zambia (2) vs Morocco (4)

Another group with everything on the line. Morocco are guaranteed 3rd at least, with 4 points probably being enough to progress. However they will want to win the group. Tanzania were minutes away from a historic win last night, but the conceding of an equaliser leaves them vulnerable and increases Zambia's hopes. DR Congo and Zambia both know a draw will put them through.

-----------------------------AFC Cup-------------------------------
GROUP A - Today 3pm
Qatar go through with a 100% record.
Tajikistan join them thanks to a final game victory.
China sit 3rd with 2 points after failing to score.
Lebanon crash out.

GROUP B - Tuesday 11:30am
Australia top the group.
Uzbekistan finish second.
Syria get through as one of the best 3rd placed teams.
India go home without scoring.

GROUP C - Tuesday 3pm
Iran go through with a 100% record.
UAE take second
Palestine go through as one of the best 3rd placed teams.
Hong Kong go out.

GROUP D - Wednesday 11:30am
Japan (3) vs Indonesia (3)
Iraq (6) vs Vietnam (0)

A rare dead rubber, with Iraq guaranteed top and Vietnam out (H2H rules). Pre-tournament favourites Japan face off with Indonesia for 2nd in one of the few straight shoot-outs for 2nd.

GROUP E - Thursday 11:30am
South Korea (4) vs Malaysia (0)
Jordan (4) vs Bahrain (3)

The top 3 are all guaranteed at least 3rd, but will want to win ensure their top 2 place with a win.

GROUP F - Thursday 3pm
Saudi Arabia (6) vs Thailand (4)
Kyrgyzstan (0) vs Oman (1)

Group favourites Saudi Arabia need a point to secure top, while opponents Thailand need a point to secure second... Oman can still finish second, but Kyrgyzstan can only finish 3rd and need to massively improve their goal difference.

A lot to play for ahead of the knockouts that start at the weekend. Still a few big teams needing a result, and some tasty looking fixtures.

Iraq and Japan won, both through
Indonesia have to wait to see if they get 3rd place qualification - doesn't look good.

Group E in Africa underway. All can still qualify, Mali already through.

Still 0-0 in both games, 5 minutes left, which means Tunisia are heading out.
But this is the African cup of nations...

Seems we are all drama'd out. Both end 0-0 so Mali, South Africa and Namibia all progress
Tunisia are out, and Cote d'Ivoire see their penultimate hope disappear.

On to Group F, where Morocco are already through but the other 3 can still all qualify too.
Cote d'Ivoire go through if Morocco win. Otherwise they are out!

Morocco resist the temptation to knock the hosts out and win 1-0.
DR Congo go through with a 0-0, Tanzania and Zambia are out.

A few good battles in the KO round. Three ties with neighbouring countries and Senegal/Ivory Coast is a french battle
