Harry Kane

Given that there’s a good chance he’ll go another season without a trophy of note should be have joined United instead? Of course he probably wouldn’t have won one with us this season but he’d be a step closer to being the PL top scorer of all time which is surely a better achievement than being Bayerns biggest ever signing and then not winning a title in a league where coming second is coming last when at that club.

Maybe he’ll come back to the PL after one season and we’ll rescue him from having to play with Eric Dier in the snow.

Disagree with pretty all of the above re: Shearer.

I think people forget what he was like before his ACL and what he was like in the finals years of his career in terms of bringing others into play.

His ability to hold up the ball was always first class throughout his career.

Yeh, I don't agree either. Shearer was class and, as you say, adapted his game in his latter years, dropping deeper to let the faster wide players play off him.

When I look back now to the 90s/early noughties there were a load of top class no.9s in the PL. Even the good English no.9s were plentiful, which is why he likes of Cole, Fowler and Ferdinand didn't get the number caps their ability deserved.

68 Prem assists for Shearer. More than Paul “pass master but his role was different so didn’t get assists but he’s still getting better anyway” Scholes.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Just how butthurt are you over Scholes? Let it go and just accept, that despite being good in a high paced blood and thunder match, Gerrard just didn't have intelligence to control a game like Scholes. In the same way that Scholes couldn't be the high energy box to box midfielder that Gerrard was.

It was a more than a bit tongue in cheek.

Shearer ranks in the top 20 all time PL assists though.

If anything I reckon he’d score even more these days.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

He quite possibly would, as he would likely be playing up top on his own rather than alongside another forward. Would depend on the manager's tactics of course.

Would have loved to see shearer having spent his career in today’s game with all that brings. He’d be better than Kane, the baldy geordie twaaat. Some player..

Shearer’s assists would be massively inflated by performing knockdowns to Shola.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

This!

Generally, strikers in an era of 4-4-2 are liable to have more assists than a loan striker in today's mould.

That would depend in the profile of striker I suppose. Lots of strikers are expected to feed the wingers nowadays, and if they play with two good goalscoring options either side that would increase their capacity to get assists.

Or decrease it if he was playing at United.

If you're a great player, you're a great player, Shearer would be banging them in regardless

This isn't a Great vs Awful debate. It's a question of degrees. I don't think it's controversial to say that the PL now hosts a greater concentration of talent, when it's by far the richest league in the world, than it did when Shearer was playing. As such, it probably takes more exceptional talent to stand out today than it did then. I raised this point not so much to say Shearer is over-rated, but to qualify the idea that there they aren't many decent strikers around these days.
