Rashford - cutting him some slack

Yes, he can be very frustrating as a player.

Yes, he's let himself, his manager and his team-mates down with his clubbing last week.

Yes, he's probably not worth what we pay him and he won't be the main man in a United team at the top again.

However, it does seem that Marcus, based on the bits I read in the media isn't OK at present. If that's the case then we should all perhaps be a little kinder.

I don't agree with the notion that someone on £350k can't be depressed so, if he is, then I fully sympathise with him. The club needs to help him get better.

I've read that he's never been seen as a person that can be the star man and that his best work comes as being part of the support act. However, since his debut in 2016 he's often been seen as the local saviour and that's a lot of pressure for a young lad in an underperforming team. Perhaps he's just mentally shattered with it all. I praised him (as we all did) for his work with hungry kids but perhaps by doing that he's made enemies that are now taking their chance to snipe back at him.

With it being Time to Talk day tomorrow I really hope he's had time to talk with those that matter at the club and in his family and that he gets back to playing football with a smile on his face. If he can do that then we still have a very dangerous player on our hands. It seems he has behaved differently to Sancho in that he hasn't thrown his toys out of the pram so let's hope that this is his cry for help and that he's received the support he needs.

I mean, if we're to give every player that doesn't have his head right the space to have mental health issues the other side is also valid. They could just be spoiled pr!cks
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It is all about a proportionate approach. If we can get just one of them to man up through taking a tough approach then it will have been worth it, even if a few do kill themselves. Manning up is the only true solution to the problem of underperforming players.

If we do pander to them being "depressed" then they are still going to be depressed and therefore crap on the pitch. Offing themselves will give us similar levels of performance on the pitch, just don't have to pay the wages anymore so makes better financial sense for the club, which is a business remember.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Exactly. People like to be all Mariah Carey about people but who's taking the time to care about the clubs that pay them? Businesses need love too. Good point, Michael.

Kyle Walker has had a secret family behind his wife's back and had less media attention than Marcus Rashford attending a nightclub, with his own girlfriend I might add.

I want to get off this planet. It's full of absolute morons. The lads made a mistake. A mistake which isn't really a huge one in the grand scheme of things and people want him hung in the streets for it.

Definitely a lot of people who hated every goal he scored last season. The hatred hasn't only come on the last few months with what I'm seeing. It's almost like it's personal. Don't understand it.

Firstly, Kyle Walker has never let this affect his football.

Secondly, I don’t think people could give two hoots about Rashford going to a nightclub if it doesn’t affect his football. You don’t go out drinking and call in sick to any job, let alone one paying you such vast sums of money. Not sure what he was thinking, it’s unprofessional and he knows people will recognise him.

Finally, I don’t think people “hated” every goal he scored. The praise was way over the top, he’s had good spells before and I think those who “hated” it, simply realised it was as another purple patch. He has lots of potential that he hasn’t fulfilled, and the players who have the talent he does will always get more media coverage when not performing.

I don't think that's ever going to be the dominant stream of fan culture, particularly in the online world, but I hope it's the one I represent more often than not

Fair enough, that's certainly admirable. I guess I err on the side of deferring judgement most of the time when it comes to off-field issues. But in reality I'll continue to be annoyed with the effect of such things even if I don't jump to judgement immediately. Like, I can be frustrated as a fan that Dele Alli wasted his potential, but also understand and be empathetic as to why it happened.

You have no idea what he's going through though. For all we know he's going through something huge. It would certainly explain a lot of his behaviour and body language.

You don't go from player of the season and Erik's golden boy to what we are seeing now unless something has happened.

I just think fans who don't like Rashford anyway are making it out to be a far bigger issue than it was because it's easy ammo.

He's said sorry and took his punishment and people still won't shut up about it.

well done Red Russian. You 'got me'.

------------------------------------------------------------------

I didn't get you. Barry got you.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

...and in the process caused me a moment's amusement, for which I am grateful.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Then Im pleased for you. Genuinely.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

So we're both happy. This has been a wonderful day. And we can thank Barry for bringing us this happiness.

To clarify I'm coming at it from an angle of concern for Rashford and his wellbeing. We have no right to know what's going on in his private life of course but I am trying to understand and offer sympathy if he is experiencing problems.

So are you saying he doesn’t like been the “star man” and the “local saviour” on the pitch but was happy to be the “star man and local saviour” off it?

Seems a tad contradictory to me!
