According to a weary old fart.
I don't think it was gutless. City showed how unorganised we are. They get into space better than us, passed better than us, knew their role and position better than us, understood their plan better than us.
I'm afraid that's down to ETH.
The only thing in his favour is that City do it better than any team in the league.
That performance

What does cowardice mean in football?
If you mean trying not to lose the game by setting up initially cautiously and patiently then that is a tried and tested and often successful tactic, between 2 unmatched teams.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He wasn't trying not to lost a game with those tactics. He was guaranteeing defeat but trying to keep the score down - and that is cowardly. I'd rather we took the risk of losing by more goals in an effort to at least trouble our opponents.
And there was no "initially" about it - out xG in the last 75 (SEVENTY FIVE) minutes of the game was 0.0. It really was pathetic. But I expect no better because we are absolutely brutal and getting worse by the week it seems.
I asked earlier, how many games have people here genuinely enjoyed watching under ETH? I can count on one hand and I'd be surprised if anybody here stretched far beyond that
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You’ve no idea what his tactics would have been at 0-0.
United scored early, so of course they tried to shut things down a bit.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I've a fairly decent idea, given that I saw our tactics at 1-1
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Totally different game by that point.

But City are a much better at football that United. Also they are fitter, stronger, more motivated and better coached. Also they were at home in a derby game.
If you try to take your own brand of a progressive attacking game on the front foot to a much more superior side on their own wicket, you are looking down the barrel of a battering if they are at it.

I don't think there was much wrong with the approach of being cautious and defensive. Out issue was we lacked quality when we did actually get the ball. There was space to exploit had we found the right ball. Far too often we chose the wrong option and when you don't win when you play defensively you open yourself up for criticism.

It wasn't gutless on the part of the players. But the tactical set up from first minute to last was pretty cowardly
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Didn't we try to play different tactically last season and lost 7-0?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not overly. We didn't attack much in that game either and our opponents in that game had a similar xG to City's today. Is reminding us of other crap defeats under ETH really furthering your falsely optimistic cause here? It's pathetic mate, today was a cowardly defeat, every metric shows that
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No, it doesn't show cowardice, it shows a poor, disorganised defeat.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If you set out to defend for your life from the first minute, that is cowardice and damage limitation. It's pathetic. Our xG was 0.19, we had no shots after the first 15 minutes. That is nothing to do with the defence, it's to do with a tactical surrender.
And defensive errors will occur when you constantly invite pressure on to such a glaringly weak area. There's an inevitability about that. Pity ETH didn't seem to realise that
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It’s about execution as well, though. If we set up to be more attacking and are shiiiit with the ball we’ll have the same problems, but be even more exposed in defence - something we’ve seen numerous times this season. With just don’t have very good players, especially with all the injuries.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This is true but at this stage I'd just rather we went down swinging and gave ourselves some (albeit minuscule) chance of victory than just meekly surrender to an inevitable defeat, as we did today. Who cares if we get stuffed, so what if our goal difference is minus 5 instead of minus 2 (Christ, minus 2) at the end of the day?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Which is fine but no manager worth their salt would do that in these circumstances.

We cannot keep the ball. It wouldn’t have been going down swinging, it would have been going down with our hands tied our banks and letting the opponent smash us in the face repeatedly.
