Mainoo

I see the Guardian here has been heaping praise on Mainoo after his performance against Belgium last night (who was it saying he's not ready for international football?)

https://www.theguardian.com/football/2024/mar/26/kobbie-mainoo-provides-spark-but-englands-defensive-frailty-remains

I didn't watch the match (was watching Wales)

But to anyone who did watch the England game, how did he perform?

Comparing Mainoo to Iniesta ffs

He’s a good solid player; that’s it.

It’s one thing playing Belgium in a friendly at Wembley, it’s an entire different thing playing in Germany in an international tournament. The pressures are completely different.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

This is true.

Also true that some very young, relatively inexperienced players have coped fine with those kinds of challenges. Euro 2004 wasn't too soon for Rooney (at almost the same age Mainoo is now). Rooney of course had more senior experience at that point, but the reason he was ready for international football was his mentality, not the minutes he had put in at Everton. So I'd say the difference is mainly that we knew more about Rooney's mental readiness than we do about Mainoo's due to seeing him over a longer period of time. Hopefully the people making decisions about Mainoo are well informed about his psychology and take that seriously into consideration.

I guess it's worth pointing out that the world around playing for England is very different to 20 years ago - for better and worse. Social media amplifies everything. On the other hand, I'd say the England set-up itself is a lot more united and supportive than it was in the 2000s, and the media is a little bit less toxic and hysterical in its reporting of the England team.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah I do understand all that. But also how many central midfielders have started at the Euros after what may be four friendlies? It’s one for Southgate, if he thinks he’s ready then fine. But I’d be surprised if he does, and that’s okay by me. I don’t think it would be fair to throw him into the lion’s den.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Exactly. Its as if Southgate didnt have a plan for his team selections for the Euros in his mind 3 months ago. Suddenly Mainoo has appeared st United and Soutgate probably hopes he is going to save his job. Which is very unfair to subject to an 18 year old. Stick to the plan Gareth and win the Euros with what you know and have planned with. Mainoo will be ready for World Cup qualifying next season onwards lif he carries on progressing.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Well this isn’t true, Mainoo wasn’t even called up to begin with he was in the u21s.

Because of injuries he was brought into the seniors and has impressed, but that doesn’t mean Southgate will throw all his plans out of the window because of about 90 minutes in friendlies.

I suspect they’ll be keeping tabs on him and communicating with United as to whether they think he’ll be ready for playing in a tournament like the Euros. Say what you like about Southgate, but he’s not one just to throw a youngster in at the deep end if he doesn’t think they’re ready.

RBW I think that's a slightly uncharitable view of Southgate, who seems to take his duty of care to players very seriously, regardless of what you think about his abilities as a manager.

Ultimately none of us really know whether the right call is to protect Mainoo or give him a chance he's ready for. We only have our gut instincts. I'm happy for the people who know him far better than I do to make that call.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Its just an opinion on how I see it.

Btw i think Southgate has been a fantastic England manager. The best manager since Sir Alf. And ive lived through every WC and Euro tournament under every one of them. Gareth has just got this Mainoo decision wrong IMO. I still hope it works out for England Mainoo and Southgate.

Whilst I agree this comparison is probably hyperbolic, do any of us recall how Iniesta was doing at 18/19?

If it goes well in Germany it will be the right decision by Gareth.
