If you're old enough then you're good enough. Now don't get me wrong, I accept England/United have had lots of promising youngsters in the last 20 or so years who haven't done anything; but with Mainoo it all feels so different. It's his mentality and composure on the ball; nothing fazes this kid at all. We shouldn't be scared as a fanbase to play down just how good our boy Mainoo is. Believe the hype, this kid is worth it.
I've never seen an 18 year old CM dominate an international game the way he did against Belgium. Their experienced midfielders just didn't know how to handle him at all; the way he receives in the defensive third, only to progress into midfield either with a lovely pass or silky dribble is genuinely top class
The biggest problem for Mainoo now is finding his best position. I think he's possibly too good a footballer to just play as a 6. His ability going forward will perhaps see him play a little bit further up the pitch, whilst mixing in some traditional positions as a 6, like receiving the ball from the GK or CBs. Another worry for me is that, like Pedri, he will get overplayed between now and when he's about 20 and then end up with several muscle injures like the Spanish wonderkid has.
He's a generational talent and he's ours
If you look at our rivals and their CMs who are similar in age to Mainoo, the likes of:
Caicedo
Curtis Jones
Enzo Fernandez
Maddison
Clarke
Gallagher
Rico Lewis
Harvey Elliott
Bentancur
Szoboslai
I genuinely think he's better than all of them from what I have seen. Even if you disagree with me, as a United fan, I guarantee you wouldn't swap him for any of them.
Great going into the summer too because the market rate for a player of his ability is upwards of £80 to £90 million now
