Some people thought the Liverpool game would be a turning point, but it was a mixture of both good luck and the 'anything can happen in a cup game' that went for us, but the Brentford game was a more accurate reflection of what we have been like this season
-------------------------------------------------------------
It would have been naive to believe that game was a turning point, and I'm not sure I noticed anyone here make that claim. At the same time, I wouldn't say it was an especially lucky win. The expected goals stat had us at nearly double Liverpool's (4.25 to 2.18) and they overperformed their xG thanks to fortunate deflections.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think the good luck came into it, in that at 2-1 up, Liverpool butchered some great positions to score more, and in most circumstances, would have won gone on to win the match comfortably, but we did hang in there and I guess that's the magic of the cup.
Perhaps less on here and more media hype regarding the 'the turning the corner feeling', although perhaps most of us were aware not to hope too much following similar sentiments after the Everton away game and Villa fightback.
Stats can tell a whole number of stories - the 3 goals we scored and expected goals stat certainly goes against the grain of our normal performances - 40 PL goals this season is a shocking return.

I think the Liverpool game could have been a turning point... in the players and manager together made an effort to make it one. They must have discussed that possibility. I would be v surprised if there wasnt a players meeting called to discuss the meaning of that result. However the Brentford game makes me doubt that.
It wasnt a lucky win. In cup football you just do what is required to win. Which United did a bit better than Liverpool. However clearly Liverpool are a better team and showed that from the last 5 mins in the first half and a lot of the 2nd half. But Cup football and the United crowd got United across the line.

Unfortunately I expect Liverpool will make up for that defeat next tie we meet. It would be somewhat damning if we turn up all guns blazing vs them as it would show the players can’t get motivated against the Brentford’s of the world

Well the only cliche I can think Erik will use before the game on Sunday to rally the troops wil be to make sure that the performance in the Cup game vs Liverpool wasnt a one off.
God knows what he will say to them before the Chelsea game.

There's a real mentality issue with the team. There is no fear factor for any team playing us, and the lower placed teams know they will get chances against us if they defend soundly, because we don't really score many and our midfield is easy to over-run. I think against the 'big teams', the motivation is there for us already, and Chelsea will still be considered a 'big match' regardless of their position, so I wouldn't be surprised if we put in a good performance. We also tend to get a bit more space to play against a big team, because they will play more openly against us, which you tend to do against teams who you don't see as threatening.
All boils down to the same thing - we're just a mess

The international break murdered any momentum we could have gained from he Liverpool win. I wasn't surprised to see us put in a shambles of a performance against Brentford but would have been more surprised had we played that fixture just a few days after the Liverpool game.

True about momentum. Though I’ve seen us too many times have good results/performances in big games only to look absolute shiiiiiite a week later, so it wouldn’t have surprised me if Brentford still happened without the international break.

Erik just confirmed Maguire, Varane and Evans are fit for the Chelsea game. But for how long is anyone’s guess

Nothing really changed regarding our defensive issues - just hoping our attack is on a 'going day'

We’d beat them. They are worse than us
