From what I've read, the PL isn't going to use the AI offside technology that was used (to great effect, I thought) in the World Cup, but instead a version used by UEFA in its competitions. The former involves having a chip in the football, and works a bit more automatically and smoothly. I guess the PL may have wanted to save money, or perhaps there's a view that technology is progressing so fast that the currently more advanced option could be out of date soon, making it a short-sighted investment.

I would favour the offside method used in the WC far more. If it was fully automated then surely it's future proofed, no? You don't want offside technology to evolve any further than what's required.

I think you are correct, cost implications may be higher to implement chips into balls over utilising existing cameras, used for VAR, with the addition of software to go down the semi automated route.

Only works if they implement it correctly though. The offsides are only a small part of the issue.

In Europe, you'll notice that VAR let the refs get on with it for the best part, but in the PL it's an absolute mess. Refs afraid or too bold to make decisions as VAR will review, but VAR doesn't review accurately.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I think all our VAR needs is for them to determine a level of involvement and be consistent with it. We seem to swing from micro analysis of everything taking ages, to a quicker, light touch with a high bar.

Fans expectations need managing. Decide whether , its gonna be light touch or micro analysis as an approach, stick with it and then fans get used to it and know what to expect. SO if they're going to keep the bar high, then keep it there, in all games instead of VAR being hands -off in some games but behaving differently in others.

Mic'ing the refs is essential IMO to give VAR decisions credibility, transparency and accountability. Also changed protocols so its more of a team effort rather than VAR dictating whats viewed and what isnt.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

It is all down to how forensic the officials behind VAR should be getting to determining an offside. It's become too forensic for my liking, especially as the time taken to arrive at the decision is taking longer than it takes other leagues. The issue is not the technology, it is the competence of the officials. It's staggering how many numpties officiate going by the debacle we saw in the SPURS V LIVERPOOL game. The automated offside eliminates this and there is very little room for complaint because they've all signed up to this version! A fully automated system would have been better though.

* microphoning officials is a great idea, for transparency but also for additional entertainment. 😂

VAR officials will still be used when deciding whether an offside player is interfering with play or not, so Man City will still benefit from an extra 6-10 points each season over everyone else.

Why?

Don't really think it will make much of a difference. The offsides in VAR haven't been an issue + the only mistake (which was large) was in communication, not in the decision that was made.

It might speed it up, which is great, especially if it's almost instantaneous. We can get back to celebrating instead of wait wait wait celebrate

You've got a point about the 5 subs but surely this semi automated offside is a step in the right direction, late or not.
