Formation

Lots of criticism about the 4-2-3-1 formation, and how non existent our midfield appears at times.

So, how would you like to see us set up next season?

Safe to say that whoever the manager is, the line up will include Mainoo, Garnacho, Bruno and Hojlund.

I don't think there's an issue with the formation as such. It's just that we seem stretched out across the pitch no matter who's playing. A 433 would present the same issues I think. If the manager wants to play a press on the front foot then we do need forward who are happy to press and also defenders who are willing to play a high line.

Dare I say we looked better in terms of our application in forward positions last night because all three were putting in a shift. That allowed us to keep the pressure on as we got the ball back cheaply plenty of times as Sheff Utd had to go long.

I think another experienced CF might be on the shopping list to help out/mentor/rotate with Hojland could be on the cards. He cant do it all alone.

Still 1 up top though

We don't play a 4-2-3-1. That's just how TV stations line us up.

Our 4-2-3-1 isn’t really a that. It’s more like a 4-3-3 a lot of the time with one of the deeper midfielders advancing further up.

In any case it’s redundant. All the main formations work just fine. Obviously you need the players and the organisation of those players to make any system work and 4-2-3-1 is no different. Out of possession it’s a 4-4-2 which many teams fall back into now (we just don’t do our out of possession work very well!).

The problem isn't the formation, it's the work-rate of the players and working together as a team and having a coach who makes sure they play the way he wants them to.
I'm not sure what is being coached, but individually we have players who are better than / comparable to most teams, but we look lazier and concede more chances than most teams

Taremi is available on a free. That would allow us to invest in other more pressing areas of the squad while giving Hojlund someone to learn from and who can allow him to have a rest from time to time.

Bruno should in theory have more freedom to get forward in to the number 10 position in a 4231. He needs to be closer to the striker. That does rely on having defenders who have the pace and ability to turn quickly and pass out, to support the two sitting midfielders.
