Co Efficient Watch Update

It's been a couple of months since StrikeMug Muppets excellent "Co Efficient Watch" article, as I haven't seen any mention of this for a while I wondered if there is any update? Do five teams finish in the top four?

Last I heard Spurs had one hand on their first trophy since the first episode of Coronation Street, "The Co Efficient Cup".

Please tell me they haven't choked and bottled it again?

Villa getting KOed and easily by a Greek team is shocking for a club lying 4th in the supposedly vastly superior Premier League
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Olympiacos managed by another manager from the excellent Basque stable.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Olympiacos conversion rate over the 2 legs was insane - they had less than half the shots Villa did over the 2 legs only to score 6 compared to Villa’s 2. El Kaabi scored 5 of the 6.

It happens. Douglas Luiz had a shocking tie as well - conceding 1 penalty and missing another.

For those that like to whack the Prem - it produced 2 of last years 3 euro winners. 60% of CL finalists in the last 5 years have been English, only Real Madrid can hold a candle to that.

What happened this year is Man United and Newcastle were atrocious.

I will happily bet with anyone and everyone on her that England secures an additional CL spot next season. You all like to try and belittle my predictions, let’s see if any of you have the cojones to actually take the bet - I am aware most will run and hide
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Usual suspects gone missing again, can never put their money where their big, ill informed and nearly always wrong gobs are
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm not sure what that has to do with the Basque manager topic I mentioned.

Mendilíbar, the bloke currently at Olympiacos, is the guy who took Sevilla when they were toying with relegation last season and sucker-punched United en route to them winning another Europa League title.

Alonso, Arteta, Emery, Iraola, Lopetegui, Valverde, Alguacil (Real Sociedad) and Mendilíbar all hail from a region of little over 2 million inhabitants.

It's pretty remarkable.

As for the PL providing most of the clubs in the closing rounds of European competitions, it makes perfect sense. It's by far the richest league. Just like it makes perfect sense for Madrid to make the closing rounds in Europe.

The surprise isn't all those PL sides getting far, if anything it's that they don't hoard a greater proportion of the trophies.

Apologies, was not directed at you.

On your point, the Prem plus Real Madrid do hoard the Champions league over the last 5 years - the prem winning 3 and Real 1, Bayern won the other.

It’s the Europa league where English clubs have massively underperformed, including Liverpool this season. My theory is that the big 6 Prem clubs do. It take it anywhere near as serious as our European counterparts and that’s what costs us more than anything else. Different comp, but Lille and Olympiacos had their games between European legs postponed to try and help them - the Prem will never do that.

No worries.

Regarding the hoarding comment, the thing is that 5 years feels like a bit of an arbitrary cutoff point, since the PL's been the wealthiest league for much longer.

I'm aware that some PL sides do to throw the minor European competitions when they've got bigger fish to fry (the bigger fish generally being when they entertain the possibility of making the CL through the league), but that only accounts for a proportion of the entrants, and it also completely ignores the fact that sides from the other big leagues also rotate quite a bit in the EL/ECL before those tournaments get to the pointy end. If it goes largely unnoticed, it's because your average fan or pundit doesn't know what the starting teams from those leagues would normally look like.

And other than in very specific circumstances, they definitely don't throw them once they're into the QFs or deeper. You can't tell me United or Liverpool, to name a couple of salient examples, threw their Europa League finals against Villarreal and Sevilla (curiously enough, as an aside, both of which were under one of the Basque managers mentioned above).

What I really won't buy is this idea -which is by no means new- that PL sides don't win more in Europe because they just can't be bothered.
