Spirit of 89!!

Alas, it seems as if the title is staying in Manchester. We need a miracle on Sunday, and I don't think our Jesus is capable of them.

It has been a great 2024 in the league, sadly we gave ourselves too much to do and dropping just 5 points from 51 wasn't good enough.

We host Everton on Sunday, and we have to do our part even if West Ham can't do theirs. To finish on 89 points will show progression from last season, hopefully we can continue that upward curve.

Speaking of 89, the last time the top spot changed hands on the last day of the season was 1989. Similar to this week we lost top spot when a midweek game in hand was taken advantage of - Liverpool spanking West Ham 5-1. Back then we were the massive underdogs for the title when we travelled to Anfield - but Michael Thomas created the greatest finish to a title race with his late, late title winning goal.

On the theme of 89 - we have scored 89 goals this league season. Saka leads the way with 16, with Havertz and Trossard on 12 each. Odegaard (8) may fancy his chances of hitting double figures. Jesus and Martinelli should be a little embarrassed to be behind Rice (7) in the scoring charts. Jesus (4) is tied with Gabriel and White - and still 1 behind Nketiah! Can he end the season on a high and match Eddie - only time will tell.

Everton are in great form, with the pressure of relegation off their backs. 4 wins in 5, 4 clean sheets in 5. Pickford went very close to the golden glove and will be desperate to sign off with another. It could be a tough game, but at least goal difference is no longer a worry - if it comes to that we are champions!

They say football is a funny old game, so I guess we have to keep the faith! As long as City don't do what they did against Villa in 22 or QPR in 12 and give us real hope before ripping it away late on!!

89 by far the greatest finish to an English top flight campaign.

Not sure, I still think Aguerooooooooooooooooooo was better. That game had everything including Barton being a complete schitt, City coming back from the dead and Stoke got relegated with Kevin Davies up front
----------------------------------------------------------------------

So to clarify, Man City winning late against cannon fodder was better than the two best teams in the country battling it out with one needing to win 2-0 and doing so in injury time? Throw in the backdrop of Hillsborough being a month earlier.

Agreed, even though my team were on the wrong emd of it you'll never top that for a seaon finale. 1st v 2nd on the final day for the title. Id be surprised if you ever see that again. When was the last time 2 teams who might even be considered as title challengers played each other on the last day.

Yeah., Guaranteed safe QPR literally giving the ball to City and letting them score was soooo much better than the top two going head to head and it being decided in injury time.
Barton literally got himself sent off on purpose to help his former club.

Yeah, 89 was far better than 2012.

Think it was also the last time a team in 2nd place on the last day has actually finished up winning the league.

I'm not old enough to remember the 89 season but it's not hard to understand that was far more amazing than the Aguero moment, as exciting as that was to witness at the time.

In 1989 it was in our hands, we knew what we had to do and we did it, and all the other match results were totally irrelevant. This time it's not.
