Maresca to leave Leicester

Being widely reported that Chelsea have made an approach, Maresca has agreed to leave and finishing touches being put on the deal which could be wrapped up in the next 48 hours

Reported by The Telegraph, Metro and Yahoo sport.

Wow. I mean Chelsea must be nuts. Literally bonkers. What on earth has Maresca got over Pochettino? He has 1 seasons experience. 1 season. Playing ultra dull football with a squad way too good for the division it was in

Don’t get me wrong - very talented coach but he’s experienced nothing in the grand scheme of things.

As for Leicester - where does that leave us? In the hands of Rudkin and Top I’m afraid.

The only question with Moyes is whether he wants to walk into a club that’s getting a minimum 6 points deduction, has no money to spend and is fighting a relegation battle it will struggle to win. That’s the problem now - when you’ve got an ownership who have made such a mess, it puts good and experienced managers off.

You’re then left with gambles - which Maresca was. Mind you Top has been gambling with Leicester ever since 2020 so why stop now…..

I don’t see why not. It’s what Moyes specialises in, taking clubs in those positions and helping to build them up.

And currently it seems the only thing that matters to most premier clubs is that the manager wants to play possession based football, so it limits his options further.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I personally think smaller clubs have got to abandon their obsession for playing possession football at all costs. I think it’s an aspiration you can have and something you can build to over time. The priority for Leicester is survive - by any means necessary. If that’s grinding out ugly wins then so what?

Once you’re established you can then implement your vision and start building. That’s why the Maresca appointment would never have worked for Leicester in the Pl - we would have ended up like Burnley. We were already getting horribly exposed in the championship but got away with it as the quality is woeful

Yeah I agree with that. I don’t think it’s an obsession big clubs should have either. Football’s always been about contrasting styles, and I think there a many managers and coaches that probably don’t get the opportunities they should do because of that obsession with style.

I mentioned Carlos Corberan on the previous Maresca thread; decent tactician and well used to working with no money.
However, David Moyes wouldn’t be a bad shout. Had an excellent record with Preston and Everton, never got a fair crack at Manchester Utd, failed at Real Sociedad and Sunderland, but did a really good job at West Ham in his two stints there. He’d do for me.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Corberan would be sensible. Horrible to play against, very well organised, excellent man manager, essentially playing on the break (to our strengths). Football won’t be great but we have to be pragmatic in our situation. The guy works relentlessly on pressing and defence and West Brom have had about 7 clean sheets on the bounce

Let’s be honest - they should have beaten us when we played them, he completely stitched Enzo up tactically. Just didn’t have the players

If we appoint Oscar Garcia then I’m officially done with this club. 😂 Literally would be the most embarrassing appointment since - well Dean Smith

Interesting. A bit more explanation as to why would not come amiss. I've had a look at his record and whilst not stunning, it doesn't look desperately bad?

I'm asking as he may be under consideration by our useless DoF, he apparently attempts to play a possession based game, so fits in the deluded 'Man City lite' philosophy. He's also already employed by KP at OHL.

By the way, I just don't get this obsession with possession football at all costs, I don't see why we couldn't aim to be a counter attacking team with a strong defence who are capable of playing more expansively when appropriate.

The bookies odds have changed over the last couple of days: Steve Cooper 3/1, Carlos Corberan 5/1, Graham Potter 6/1, David Moyes 8/1, Oscar Garcia 10/1.

So Garcia has come into the reckoning. Any of the other 4 would be a reasonable choice to give us a glimmer of hope of avoiding the drop. The problem for us is that all 4 of them probably realise we're in deep sh*t and they'd be much better waiting a few months until the first managerial sackings of the season when they could be asked to try and keep up an established EPL club who have had a poor start.

Interest in Corberan has cooled somewhat by the looks of things with Cooper now the front runner. He made a decent fist of keeping Forest up, which is both a great and terrible thing to have on his CV when considering our next manager.

One thing that's happening which is really bad for us is that it is dragging. Nothing we can do about the ongoing negotiations between Enzo and Chelsea, but any delay is disruptive to our preparations for next year.

It won’t be Cooper or Moyes. The one thing you can guarantee is that this club will take another stupid gamble. They don’t have the intelligence to do anything else and haven’t since Vichai passed

The latest news from a fairly reliable source is that Ruud Van Nistelrooy is being considered. That in itself tells you how utterly deluded this ownership is. RVN, like Maresca before him, has no experience at this level and barely anything to his name except a decent season in the Dutch league with PSV. Top only got away with the Maresca appointment because of the ridiculous level of quality in the squad compared to the rest of the division. Make no mistake - we were Man City last season and even then Maresca was seriously wobbling

Garcia has got nothing on his CV to suggest he could anything to keep us up. Nothing. Cooper and Moyes absolutely would make a good gist of it. Corberan absolutely would and is clearly one for the future

We won’t go for any of them. We’ll make another stupid leftfield appointment because we’re a club that is being run by absolute clowns

Daily Telegraph reporting Maresca signed on a five year contract with an option on a further year. If he manages to see that out, it will be something of a novelty!

posted on 30/5/24

Yeah he’ll be gone within a year. I think he’ll start off very well, he has the players to play that system at that level - but he simply isn’t Pep. He’s not Arteta. I’m not sure he’s even Vincent Kompany yet.

But i think he will have Chelsea in the top 4 - they just have very very good players and Poch has done a lot of very good groundwork. I do think in the end he’ll wobble and fail however

Leicester in the meantime…..

I'd like to say it would be interesting to see how he does, but we all know where this is likely to go, it will be a miracle if he sees out his 5 year deal. That is bonkers from Chelsea.

All they need to do is to look at their history with managers since 2007 and realise they should offer (say) a two year deal with option to extend as a reasonable compromise. That would have covered all of the 16 permanent managers they have put in place since then, and they'd only have had to extend once. They have presumably spent a small fortune paying those guys off early.

If he does stay for 5 years what will they be expecting, it must be Champions League football every year as a minimum, but surely also some regular major silverwear? Todd Boehly being American presumably goes by the maxim 'second place is the first loser' so just being top 4 won't be enough?

Still, that's all their problem, we've now got another one of our own as we are without manager.
