Don Carlo Ancelotti

For some weird reason I never see him top 3 when people speak about GOAT managers.

I know that albeit he has won leagues everywhere, his leagues title returns bearing in mind teams heโ€™s managed is not great.

After this win, for me, he is up there with Ferguson and Pep. Tbf he is the daddy of both when it comes to the champions
League.

It's why some are getting carried away with the praise, talking him up like some GOAT manager. He's top 10 but he's no Pep or Fergie. Needs to win more league titles and defend some.

Two can play that game. For all the GOAT status you award them, maybe Pep and Fergie ought to have won more CLs. It's far and away the most coveted trophy in club football.

Considering all his league dominance for 15 years across 3 countries across and the purported superiority of his football, Pep's 3 CLs is a meek return.

And SAF? What was it 2 in 25 years or something like that?

Carlo's also won CL titles in 2003, 2014 and 2024 ... that also demonstrates an adaptability to change that also needs acknowledging.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
It goes without saying SAF really stank it up in Europe if we are being fair and objective. By the time he got Quiroz and stepped away from the 442 system in Europe, it was too little too late/ unlucky Barcelona side.

I reckon Mbappe wins no CL at Real Madrid.

Probably should have won more yeah, particularly Pep who has been at the clubs he's been at. I do think there is more luck involved in cup competition though as opposed to in the league.

Apples and oranges. The league requires you to show consistency over a much longer series of games, but the average level of PL opponents isn't that of CL opponents, and generally speaking, neither is the pressure that rides on individual games.

It's very different to go into a knockout game against the champions of England, Italy or Germany knowing that a defeat will put you out than a 'must-win' game against Luton, Forest or Fulham, which is never quite a must-win anyway because your title rivals might also drop points the same week or in the following fixture.

They're completely different beasts.

To quote Brian Clough:

"I would gladly go out of the European Cup, the League Cup and the FA Cup, which we're not even in yet, I would gladly go out of them tomorrow if you could guarantee me winning the football league. Because that is the one that you have to have every single aspect of football management about you to win it. You've got to have endurance, you've got to have talent, you've got to be a little bit daft. You've got to have strength, psychology you name it."

I tend to agree with him.

European Cup and the Champions League are very different competitions though. Ancelotti has won league titles in 6 counties and 5 CLs over a 20 year period where the game has changed so much. Whether you think he’s the best or not it’s clears he’s up there, an incredible manager.

To add to this, he is only 64. Although I have to admit his league title returns is not great, he could easily go on to win two further titles with this madrid team and another champions league. 8 league titles and 7 champions league Top 2 for me at that stage no doubt.
