Signed for Chelsea. According to the BBC, we made a late attempt, but he favoured Chelsea and had already agreed to move there.
Disappointing we miss out, but good to hear that we were at least interested in such a deal.
This deal has led to us being linked with Chelseas Chabaloah, who i don't really know much about

Some silly "journalist" looking for clicks while we wait for the Euros. This deal was in the pipeline ages ago. Doubt United tried a lastminute hijack.

Why wouldn't we?
Highly rated, no fee, Prem proven, we need at least 1 CB.

Some average Fulham defender who you lost out on you are happy that you were linked to him?

He’s a solid player and for free would be a great squad option for any of the top 6 imo.

He’s pretty average, no big loss we’ve already got enough of those.

If he wasn't a free transfer there's no way a top half PL side would be linked with him.

He's no Jonny Evans

You probably know as much about him as you do about the player in your op

There's been reports and links with us for a while. I don't imagine it was a last ditch attempt, I think it's pretty fair to think we'd been at the table, made enquiries etc and dropped out because the deal wasn't what we wanted. Chelsea however were pretty happy so while we left, they pushed on and eventually got it sorted.
I think that's totally fine. I have no issue with us spending a couple of years being a bit more bullish and picky whilst we sort our wage structure etc out. I don't really want a backup defender on 150k. Even though he's a good player there's so much evidence that it doesn't simply translate onto the pitch once you make a big move. It's far easier to be a very good player for Fulham than it is a decent one for Manchester United and the less backup players we have, who aren't good enough but are sitting on 150k+ the better IMO.

Dont particularly think he would have been back up for utd with your injury issues over the last year. Casemiro was playing cb for a period. isn't varane also leaving?
what I can see its £140k a week which would have been 11th for utds top earners last year. Considering he was bought on a free thats not bad at all.
