It's all a question of balance. We take an injured Shaw, the only left footed player in the squad. Surely Mitchell or Chilwell should have gone, even with their uninspiring form this season, they would give us width on the left when Foden drifts in.

We want to get the best out of Rice but pair him with an attacking right wingback in TAA, who has little positional, pressing and covering sense. Gallagher would give much more energy in the press and ball winning area whilst staying if Rice pushes forward.

And we leave Grealish behind, despite him being one of the few players who could actually offer us something different. He could have carried the ball forward today and won us free kicks and actually run at the defence.

It is true though. Look at the humiliating England for years now and generally 1 or 2 Man Utd players play any minutes in last 20 years or so. Just checked 2006 world cup last game only 2 current Man Utd players played. 2008 euros qualifier 0 Man Utd players played against Croatia. 2010 world cup defeat to Germany only 1 Man Utd player played. 2012 Euros defeat to Italy, 3 Man Utd players played. I can’t be bothered to go through the rest but it is clear England don’t choose Man Utd players usually. The fact Wan-Bissaka hasn’t played for England since switching from Crystal Palace to Man Utd tells you everything. I reckon if he was at Crystal Palace he would have played at least 20 times for England now.

Carrick when he was a Spurs player got called up-to England squad and played 1 game he was given MOTM in a knockout game. England would take 12 more years to win a knockout game after. Carrick won 5 PL and nearly won 7 PL’s in a row but didn’t play 1 second for England while at Man Utd at a tournament. Not good enough to play 1 second in a game for England lol. Played in 3 CL finals as well and was SAF most influential signing.

I personally think if Foden, Bellingham, Rice all played the same level at Man Utd they wouldn’t have got into the England starting 11.

Grealish for me is a more better player than Foden as an all rounder. Foden just wants to smash the ball hard into the net.

This 100%. Experimenting, with central midfield, in an actual tournament ... clueless, utterly clueless.

Southgate has been masked by a pot of good players for far too long. He sets his teams out in a way that reflects him - boring and utterly uninspiring.
