Things are so bad at the club now I even miss the non successful SAF years. Which season of these 3 is your fave one?
94/95 - So close to a double and yet so far. It was the year i remember Andy Cole joining and sadly the end of Hughes. It seemed so exciting seeing Cantona and Cole becoming our new swish frontline. Even today i still can’t believe we got either from our rivals. That 9-0 win was the highlight. The Cantona kick was the low point.
01/02 - The arrival of Ruud and Veron. Honestly this side would probably be at worst second in the league now. A world class midfield with Ruud absolutely on fire. Our weak point was that defence led by Blanc. We pumped so many sides and should have made that CL final. Damn you Ole! Keane still hasn’t forgiven him 😂
04/05 - The season we saw young Rooney and young Ronaldo start to really excite. We didn’t really challenge for anything this season bar a heartbreaking FA Cup loss which we really should have won. I own all our season review DVDs going all the way back to 99 and this is one of my most watched seasons for some weird reason. The level of football we played this season is miles ahead of what we see now.
Favourite non successful SAF season

Yeah I wouldn’t swap the kick and ban for nothing happening even though it probably means another title.Like Russian says is such an iconic moment that adds to the Cantona cultness and it was doing something good imo.
Was that the season he also got a couple other reds, maybe at Highbury? Him getting a red and wearing that lively black kit seemed to go well together.
Was this also the season with the Bust (Coventry player) injury?

Mu82 - Busst was 95/96. Cantona scored the winner that day (surprise surprise that season!)

I have quite fond memories of 04-05. Watching the matches in student bars full of United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and other fans.
Even if the trophies were hoovered up by Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal (against us), there were some good days. Rooney's debut hat-trick, Alan Smith's chest and volley, and one of the greatest PL games of them all: Arsenal 2-4 United at Highbury.

The 2-4 was O'Shea's lob, right?

I was at the 9-0 match. Remember the Ipswich supporters chanting 'we want one' in response to our 'we want ten' - admirable ability to see the funny side. Ironically, if I remember correctly, we lost to them at Portman Road earlier that season, which I think was the match in which Schmeichel air-kicked the ball, leaving Ipswich a tap-in. Had we won or even drawn the away fixture, we'd have won the league.
As for Cantona karate kicking the racist, it may have cost us badly in sporting terms, but for me that's a piece of iconic club history that I wouldn't want to erase. It's part of the Cantona legend, and of course we wouldn't have any seagulls or trawlers or the story of Fergie persuading him not to quit without it.

I agree. It was a low point for me simply because of what we missed out on but as a core memory of a rebel standing up against a racist who no doubt voted Brexit in the subsequent years I’m very glad it happened. Just adds to his mystique. Plus we wouldn’t have had that iconic goal celebration against Liverpool.

Fun fact about that lob - a few years ago when I lived in north London i viewed a flat in the development that Highbury was turned into and the pitch kinda remains but is a park in between the apartments and I stood exactly on the spot of where I think the lob happened while the estate agent no doubt rolled their eyes at the amount of people she showed around who only really wanted an excuse to walk on the ‘pitch’ and relive their favourite memories.

Was that also the game when Keane and Viera went at it in the tunnel?
