It’s mental here, Dazza. I don’t really understand it in all honesty.

Half of the Portuguese will tell you that he’s destroying the national side and that every single Portuguese wants him dropped. The other half will tell you he’s still the best player in the world.

I was talking to the eight year-old neighbour of a mate the other day and asked him (a Benfica fan, obviously) who his favourite player was from the seleção. “Ronaldo. He’s the greatest ever.” No mention of António Silva or João Neves.

The kid has probably only ever watched Ronaldo since his return to United.

The cult of Ronaldo is mental stuff. I don’t think England has ever had anything like it, across sports. Not in my lifetime anyway.

I’ve seen calls for him to win the Ballon D’or if Portugal win the Euros

He’s scored a lot in Saudi and at 39 it’s still a hell of an achievement but the reality is the best side he has scored against for club or country in the past 2 years is probably Everton.

I find it amusing reading folks that would never go down as the greatest in anything in life telling a man with near all records for a forward in this game we love what he should do and how to control his ego. Mental stuff. It is like me Advising Warren Buffet on money matters and stocks.

You can have an opinion. But surely your argument also supports that I can have one, which is what I have put forward. What exactly is the issue?

They qualified early. He played very well their last game and provided an assist. A nothing game for Portugal and here you are.

How can they be team of the tournament if they get eliminated in the last 16 stage? They got pummelled by Turkey.
