Kobbie Mainoo

What did people think of his performance? Was he ok? Did he do enough for the team?

Like last game, as soon he was subbed, England started to play better. Overhyped
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Absolute nonsense. He was our best player first half. He was quiet second half though.

Kane and Foden are the issue. Not Kobbie.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He was far from the best player. Come on, ffs take the club tinted glasses offdid alright.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Statistically he was. I thought he was excellent first half.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Statistics in footy mean not a lot. Thought he played decent enough without really doing much. Which for a 19 year old was impressive Tbf, but he’s not really done much right or wrong really at the euros
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Lineker Shearer and co all highlighted him at half time as one of England's best players too tbf. 👍

As I said he faded second half. Thought he was excellent first half though. Very impressed with him.

Foden Kane and Bellingham were embarrassing yet again. Bellingham and Kane scored a few goals each this tournament without really playing well once. Foden just isn't it for England. His record is woeful.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He wasn’t excellent, he was decent without really impacting the game very much, tidy enough but not much more. Did enough to start the next. The hyperbole surrounding him is a bit mental though
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Not sure it's hyperbole when we all agreed he faded second half. Thought I was being fair.

I will stick with Lineker Shearer and co over Arsenal fans above though. They will never praise a Utd fan if they can help it.

42/43 completed passes, 100% tackle success and one key pass. He will do for me.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Fair enough, but almost none of those passes were anything progressive really, all good passing it side ways for stats, didn’t make many tackles. Not trying to put the guy down, he’s done a decent enough job when called on, but let’s stop pretending he’s vintage Zizou or Pirlo here
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm not.

You know full well there's not many more critical United fans than me either.

Kobbie been a breath of fresh air for both United and England. Just a shame that the 5 superstars in this squad aren't playing particularly well.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He has, but I also think a hell of a lot more has been made of his performances than he’s realistically merited.,

I like how he reads the game. Made an important interception in our box and a few minutes later lined up a nice shot.. it's noticeable and notable how calm and composed he is.. which I'd suggest is unusual for a player of his age and not easy to train.. Grate talent

He really shouldn't even be in the England team.

OP posts a worrying amount of Mainoo articles

He didn’t stand out at all, although neither did anyone else.

Mainoo was okay but how Foden and Kane keep starting when they have been atrocious in the tournament is a mystery.

Southgate of course won't drop Kane, but quite simply, he's not 'playing as a striker'. Doesn't offer many runs, playing as you would want a target man to play - at times he seems to be playing like a playmaker. That's not what they need from him. I believe the way he is leading the line (or isn't leading it) is affecting the team - his effort is great as always, but just stay up front!!!!

I truly believe if either Watkins or Toney was starting, they would be playing differently and be able to be slightly more direct.
Foden has been decent at best, but defo better yesterday, as of course was Saka. Still hard to understand why Palmer isn't starting - I would drop Walker who isn't impressing me at all, move Trippier out there. Shaw looked lively coming on, which just confirms how crazy it is that there is no other LB in the team. But is he ready to start?

Mainoo looks so at home in the midfield - just confirming if you're good enough, you're old enough.

Bit of a risk putting TAA on so early in ET but he managed to not fook up for the whole 5 mins and took his penalty well.
No more than a minute next time though Gareth, gambling doesn’t always pay off 👍

We've seen Mainoo play more ambitious and progressive football than he does for England. He's evidently playing a little bit within himself, which could be a case of personally opting to play it a bit safe in a high pressure and still unfamiliar environment. But it's also true of the team in general, where players are rarely hammering passes through tight gaps as they might in domestic football, nor are they generally risking passes to players who aren't in lots of space - and of course receiving and turning under pressure is one of Kobbie's strengths. So I wouldn't go overboard about his performance. He largely kept things simple, and did the simple things well. And on top of that there were maybe four or five moments when we saw the extra quality he can offer, drawing on his awareness, technical ability, calmness and surprising strength. For me, he was the best thing about the 23/24 season and I know he has lots more to show us as a player, so acknowledging he was England's third best player in this game is fine.

You really need to watch a different sport.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Look at the link above numbnuts. Lineker and the guys in the studio agree too. Kobbie was excellent first half. Definitely faded in second half though but he is 19.

Might be you who needs to watch a new sport maybe? 😂
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Lineker and the guys also talked up foden at half time, who did nothing as per usual. That doesnt mean he was the best player on the pitch.
