Rio on England

I have seen a fair bit on here as to how bad Rio is as a pundit. I came across this today which shows him in a very different light.

He goes into a bit at the start as to why his golden generation failed. It is well worth watching the whole 35 minutes though, He does go a little over the top on Mainoo but not too bad. The rest is a very levelheaded conversation with Lineker and Shearer on playing for your national team

I do think yourself and Baz are very quick to play Mainoo down.

Considering he’s essentially only been a senior footballer since last November he’s already United’s best midfielder by far (not saying much), was MOTM in a cup final against the best side in the world and has now broken into the national side and become one of the most important players.

.................

I have never played Mainoo down. I was one of the first ones on here to draw our posters attention to him when he was in the youth team.

Where you are confused is that I do not go over the top on him.

He'll need to bench Kane after 60 minutes for Ollie or it's game over. We need runners against Spain, not a guy with a big fancy name for the sponsors whose cursed to never win anything and whose legs have gone.

Kane will have to be in the right place at the right time or the game will pass him by again.

He’s joint top scorer?

What’s Ollie won other than Villa player of the year?

The last match.

I think you may be on the wrong thread.

The thing is he talks about the rivalries within the England camp but Lineker says there was none of that when he was playing and yet England weren't that great back then either.

There are obviously a lot more factors at play for why the GG underachieved. If they had a better keeper like Pickford they'd be through to at least one SF. If they had draws like Southgate they'd also be to at least one SF.

Rio does touch on some of those other factors. Sven telling him not to run with the ball for example. What did he stifle with the other players.

In a similar way to how Southgate has stifled some of the attacking talent in the team by playing defensive you mean?

Unlucky moments is another factor - Rooney getting injured, Campbell disallowed goal, Rooney getting sent off. I mean the sending off was perhaps deserved but it's bad luck I guess for ourselves and the manager. It's things like that that are being reversed for Southgate.

He has been pretty damn lucky in draws, dodgy pens and otherwise. But he’s also created a harmonious and solid England team, the guy deserves credit. He’s the best England manager in history, aside from winning it- and 66 was very sketchy in a number of ways. We’ve got to the guy some credit ffs

Sir Alf is the best England manager ever. He won the WC in 1966. And he predicted before the tournament that he would win it. Imagine any other international manager doing that. Not sure was sketchy about that in any ways.

Southgate is easily the best manger we have had since Sir Alf. 2 Euros finals and a WC Semi Final. The Euros are probably harder to win than the WC but not quite as prestigeous. Which is why he might stay around for another crack at it.
