Wide forwards pecking order

With rumours that Antony is available for loan, what do we think the pecking order is for the wide players next season?

Assuming we don't sign another wide forward, I'd like to see Rashford and Sancho battling it out for the left side and Garnacho and Amad doing the same on the right. Rashford I guess will start the season as first choice and there will be the opportunity for them to swap sides as injuries dictate.

I think it makes sense for Antony to go on loan for a season to see if he can earn himself a move elsewhere.

Anthony, worst signing in premier league history for me
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Aquilani is right up there with him. Imagine trying to replace Alonso with that. Cost you top 4 and it took you a while to get back in there.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah but if you're applying cost as a ratio then it has to be Antony or Mudryk, otherwise there are thousands of shiiiit players that have graced the Prem.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I just think the impact of failing to properly replace Alonso was huge for Liverpool. Cost you a lot of money in lost revenue through failing to qualify for the CL. I think it was 4 seasons before you got back in the top 4. Even taking into account transfer inflation, Aqualini cost less than Antony. But the his signing was pretty catastrophic for Liverpool.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Aquilani was actually good for Liverpool when he played. Problem is he barely played. Losing Alonso was not the reason Liverpool failed to qualify for the CL. Having poor owners was the reason. Due to their situation and subsequently the situation the club was put in, all the top players wanted to leave and they did, with the exception of the English ones. Can't blame them since the club was sold to them as on the up and so it was until the issues with the owners arose and they saw they would be better off elsewhere.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I actually thought you sold him at the wrong time. Seem to recall he had a few good games towards the end. We did the same with Veron. But overall both were poor signings
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes but the problem was his fitness. It was exactly the same with Keita. Both good technical players but too fragile for the PL. Everytime they came back from injury it took them a while to get up to speed, then they hit a period of good form only to get injured again, rinse and repeat.

Amad definitely deserves more of a chance with the first team but I wouldn’t ever base that view on performances in pre season as their main purpose is fitness, little else.

Relax, no one is saying he will definitely make it. Can people just look at the positive side for once?

I’m simply disagreeing with this comment based off a preseason game.

“Amad will claim his starting position on the right this season”

He’s not been good but he’s benefit from a decent right back consistently behind him. Midfielders breaking the lines more on the inside wouldn’t hurt him either.

Saying that, despite working hard I don’t see a single thing he excels at other than whinging.

I bet Utd fans find him a very hard player to like tbh.

Aquilani being the reason we missed out on top 4 is an odd take.

Amad definitely deserves a chance. He's not really a natural winger though. He likes to cut inside an awful lot and get on the ball which isn't always a bad thing. It can however sometimes backfire and make the pitch a bit too narrow. Dalot would definitely need to bomb on a lot with Amad but I could see that partnership working well given time.

Still think it will be Rashford LW and Garnacho RW to start with. Amad will definitely be chomping at the bit though to get a game should one of them not perform.

Yes, by saying performance in preseason means nothing. A lot of people get excited with Mainoo against Arsenal last pre season and rightly so. Why don’t we just see it is a positive sign that Amad had a good game, and seems to continue his good form from last season

But they do mean nothing, they’re simply there to get players up to match fitness for the new season and help with clubs branding in foreign countries. Time and time again we hear fans cream their pants over player performances during pre season to then see that player not get any game time or sold. If we lost 10-0 or won 10-0 it would literally mean nothing in terms of our players being ready or not for the season proper.

There is absolutely nothing that can be read into todays game other than basically knowing if a player is alive or not.

For me, the pecking order almost doesn't matter - it's the mindset of the players we have in there.

Rashy will never be a 30 goals / season player. What I want from him is 15-20 goals and more assists. But all he seems interested in is trying to score himself, rather that getting the team to score.
Garnacho is younger, but circumstances have dictated that we've had to use him a lot more than ideal - ultimately it's now time for him to go to another level and try to be a bit more consistent, and increase his goals and assists return.
It's tough for Hojlund - still learning himself. But the front 3 need to play and work as a unit. Hojlund needs to make the runs, but the other 2 need to be feeding him. They may be getting coached that way, but they aren't showing it.
I don't know if Sancho is genuinely going to stay with us, but at least he seems to see himself as more of a provider who can chip in with goals.
Amad still needs to prove himself but I see him as similar in approach.
Zirkzee can offer support to / instead of Hojlund, but he will have similar problems - the team needs to have the mindset of creating chances for him.
If Sancho really is staying, I want to see him and Zirkzee hit the ground running and create proper competition for places. And Amad needs more chances

Not for players that have something to prove. Of course performing well in pre season doesn’t guarantee anything, but you talk like managers don’t care how his team play in those matches
