If he does well, he'll get the job.

It's amazing though how a country with England's footballing pedigree produces so few coaches. It's a very thin talent pool. The likes of Italy, Spain and Germany don't seem to have this problem.

we were always playing catch up, so far behind took us so long to change philosophies at grass roots etc. pick the big lads stuff prob still would be doing it if not for foreign influence... Also the prem is the biggest so naturally its much harder for an English man to get a job in the prem than it is a german in bundesliga, italian in serie A, spanish in la liga etc. Mainly due to standards and competition which also means theyre probably given less time too as the money of prem survival is huge.

Yeah, but no English manager has won the title in the entire Premier League era - over 3 decades. That's just shocking. Even when Serie A was a more international league than the PL, most of the club managers were Italian. A situation where Spain has more PL managers (5) than England (3) is just weird.

yh its sumin we need to do better with for sure, i think we slowly are, our unders teams have done well recently, coached by young english managers i hope, Carsleys more modern than southgate in tactics and such. More managers like Howe and O'neil/potter than soutthgate and allardyce.

Who is the best English coach in football? They're usually overlooked and labelled as dinosaurs. Eddie Howe and Potter are the only 2 with any credentials right now, Lampard been quiet for a while whilst Scott Parker and Gerrard have some accolades.

Gary O'Neil always seems to get overlooked in these conversations. But I'd have in the top 3 English coaches right now along with Howe and Potter.

The Spain U23s have just won the Olympics. Looks like we have yet another cycle of red-hot Spanish youngsters who will go on to dominate football over the next decade.

And just like the senior Spain side that won the Euros, these kids are also playing under an unsung manager who has spent the past decade in the national setup. Managing all the way up from the Spain U16s.

I hope the English FA are paying attention.

We've got almost everything right in recent years. All the way up the age groups. Only thing we're missing is a pipeline of managers working their way up the international setup.

Argentina have also done very well for themselves by running a parallel pipeline of international managers down the different age groups.

Scaloni worked his way up from the U20s on his way to winning the World Cup.

Pablo Aimar, Walter Samuel and Roberto Ayala have been his assistant managers since 2019.

Diego Placente has just taken over at U20 after 3 years in charge of the U16s and U17s.

Mascherano has now moved up to U23.

Not to mention a whole contingent of coaches and backroom staff patiently progressing up the age groups.

Yeah it’s a big issue. Though, France and Brazil are in a similar position right now when you compare the talent pool of players to coaches. Hard to explain why those nations are having similar problems producing top coaches.
