Wolves...

A look ahead to Saturday, when we play Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Emirates Stadium.

Last Season
After Julen Lopetegui walked out a week before the season started, many predicted a season of struggle. However, Gary O'Neil stabilised the squad after 4 defeats in the first five and had them flirting with a top half finish. One win in 10 to end the season left them 14th and has raised questions again.
Their visit to the Emirates was fruitless, with 2 goals in the first 13 being enough for us despite a late Cunha goal. We also won at Molineaux, 2-0. Odegaard scored in both, with Saka and Trossard also netting.
Top scorers were Hwang Hee-Chan and Cunha.

Summer Signings
They made the Tommy Doyle loan permanent, and have brought in Rodrigo Gomes from Braga and Pedro Lima from Sport Recife. Gomes has scored a couple in pre-season, so could be one to look out for.

Summer departures
Pedro Neto is the big name loss - however he only started 17 games last season so they have got used to not having him around.
Max Kilman, though, was a mainstay in defence, so his departure may be harder felt.

Dangermen
Matheus Cunha is the obvious threat, while Pablo Sarabia has grown into his role at Wolves.
Daniel Podence is back after a loan, not sure if he is in their plans, while Hwang cannot be ignored. New signing Gomes is an unknown threat.

Back 3?
After starting with a back 4, Wolves moved back to what has been their usual back 3. With Kilman gone Craig Dawson is the experienced man at the back, with the likes of Toti, Santiago Bueno and Yerson Mosquera options. Matt Doherty, Ait-Nouri, Semedo, Lima and Hoever being full back/wing back options.
Looking at their friendly line-ups it could be back to 4?

Midfield
Keeping Joao Gomes could be big, as his partnership with Mario Lemina was a key part of their season last time. Doyle is an option, while Jean-Ricnar Bellegarde showed promise at times.

'keeper situation
A side note to the game is the 'keeper merry-go-round that could happen. Arsenal bid for Wolves #2 earlier in the window, and now rumours are that Wolves could be looking to replace Jose Sa. One name linked is our own Aaron Ramsdale.

First games are always a bit of a banana skin, but we have won the last 2 since the Brentford debacle. Hopefully we can repeat the wins over Palace and Forest that started title challenging seasons.

We also signed Strand-Larsen who scored 13 in la liga last year. And Guedes is likely on the bench and may stick around this season.

Cunha is apparently available but has been injured the last two weeks so may not be ready to start now.

And looks very likely we go with a back four. Semedo incidentally is suspended so Doherty will start.

Think it is probably too soon for Cala.
Trossard has to be in with a shout of LW. Arguably the form player there from pre-season.

I think there is still doubt over if he will go with Havertz up top with Partey DM, or Havertz in midfield with Jesus up top. I am sure we will see both this season, although game 1 may be a bit more of the safer option with Partey in (plus he is fit, which is a rare thing).

I'd bet substantially it will be Havertz up top, after the Villa debacle I think Havertz in midfield will definitely be a backup plan now never a first choice again

Matheus Cunha has been injured so not sure whether he will be fit to start.

Sorry missed where Cinci had already mentioned this.

Sounds like he could do with another week of recovery...

Excellent article.

Think Wolves might struggle this season, but O’Neil just keeps doing the business. Seems a good bloke too.

You’ll win this at a canter though I reckon.
