I think wasteful is the best word

to sum up last night. So many chances not taken.

And I 100% blame the players for this and not Ange.

am a bit concerned about Ange eye for a player

im hopefull Solanke will work out but if he flops and BJ carries on like, not only were these guys huge outlays, this it will cost us many points and places in the league
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Spot on!

Nobody ever mentions that Ange bought these players: BJ, Werner x 2, Veliz, Solomon… does he know what a decent attacker looks like????
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It's hard to tell how much he really wanted them in terms of the limitations of the club/Levy. I mean let's say Ange was managing City, do you think those are still the same players he'd want at City? We have to add into account the profile of player we target and we know Levy has some say in that.

That's not to remove accountability from Ange though as obviously he has been allowed to spend an awful lot of money on players he would have said yes to.

We’re collecting next season’s deadwood.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Maybe. Werner yes, I can't see us not thinking we need to move him on after this season. BJ and Kulu are possibilities.

Hopefully this Odobert will prove to better than any of these guys from what we've seen of them the last season or so.

Does Ange pick the players? I thought there was a new data-driven recruitment team in place for that. I know Ange will have a say obviously

If he is hand-picking his signings then yeah, it seems like his standards might be a bit low. Then again the likes of Solomon and Johnson would probably tear it up in the leagues where Ange has managed before

He said he has final say in every transfer yes or no ing them but most managers just say that tb

But lots of reports on the solanke, bj and Werner deals especially were on how much Ange regards them and sees them as players that are perfect fit for how we play

The amount of money spent on both suggests these were buys sanctioned to support the manager with his own targets and not just club buys the manager accepted. For a kick off, the moves you'd list as club buys I'd say are the likes of Bergvall, Gray and Yang, amongst others because they're relatively cheap with a huge ceiling. BJ and Solanke feel more like Ange's specific targets purely on price tag and for Solanke in particular, age profile, with little sell on value.

I should say I'm not lumping Solanke in with BJ as we don't yet know how he'll fair but I'm yet to be convinced by BJ. He's good at changing a game from the bench but start him and he doesn't offer much at all. Problem is, the same could be said for Kulu.

I have read enough times that Ange wanted Johnson, tbf, so I do believe that one. And it's not a great reflection on Ange. The player's ceiling just doesn't seem that high. There must have been plenty of wingers out there who can run at the same speed but have some technical craft on top

Same cr@p as last season, same mistakes, same wasted chances, didn’t look any different.

We’ve been this bad since Christmas ffs. How on earth is that ‘knee jerking’?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If we fail to beat Everton as well, then Ange should really start feeling the pressure and that's not knee jerking either. We all knew he needed a good start to this season.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What rubbish.

This is a long term plan, not a poor start and you're out situation.

As for the "Ange's signing" bollox, he is not the sole decision maker nor the one who identifies players.

Some of you act as if he got here last summer and stamped his feet until he got Johnson and no one else wanted him And now Solankes an Ange signing......where are you even getting this info from. It's like it's said a few times and suddenly it became gospel.

Yeah, I have to admit that he doesn't really pass the eye test, or certainly hadn't from my perspective whilst at Forest, but I just assumed it was my considerably untrained eye not seeing what Ange is. He's a decent player but certainly no better than anyone else we have and he was definitely over-priced.

It's defo a worry because I know we had the same judgement issues with Poch too. I really don't think the club can be blamed for backing Ange but I've got more faith in club choices than Ange's. We'll have to hope Solanke fits better than that. I have to say, most of the noise from people more tactically astute than I am say it's a marriage made in heaven. This guy at FourFourTwo seems to love it...

I don't think anyone is saying he has autonomy. It's just that most of the reports seem to suggest that, like BJ, Solanke was the one Ange wanted more than anyone else, aside from Neto. It's probably a case of "I like this guy because he'll fit perfectly into my system" and then the recruitment team will weigh up whether it's an astute purchase or not.

It's not crazy to suggest managers want certain players. You've only got to look at Ten Hag's signings for evidence that owners back managers with their preferred players. In order to function it has to be a bit of both. A few the manager likes and then a few that fit the club profile. That's the kind of compromise that allows these collective recruitment processes to function.

Yeah and Kulu on the other hand is one you'd categorise as a club buy rather than manager buy.

I agree they do seem more like Ange buys and from what I've heard he did want them. I'd still say we can't write BJ off just yet. His first season he did ok, not brilliant but alright. Solanke is one that does what it says on the tin. We needed a striker and we bought one that did well in the league last season. If he fails then it will fall on Ange's head, but I think most of us feel he was worthy of signing if for much more money than he should be.

Both expensive but Ange, if he is to last a while and go on to succeed with us, will be allowed to make a few misjudgments from time to time.

Well I didn't say he needed sacking but surely he should feel the pressure because with two very winnable games from our first 2, we should have expected more than if we can't win either, with the tough games then set to come.

The way the season finished last season means he left himself in a position to feel the pressure should he not get a good start. A long term plan is fine if there is progress being made. Carrying on the form of last season wouldn't be progress.
