Enzo Maresca today: “I am not working with 42 players. I am working with 21 players. The other 15-20 players are training apart. I don't see them."
That's a lot of capital and salary expenditure tied up in players who won't be registered to play for Chelsea this season. Does anyone see opportunities for a bargain fee or a handly season-long loan?
They've undoubtedly overpaid for a lot of players in their shopping binge but under pressure to not have useless assets on their books they're just as likely to let players go for less than their actual value.
I liked the look of Lavia when he was at Southampton. Good on the turn, athletic, decent range of passing. The kind of player who could complement Mainoo but also bring some of the same qualities when we need to limit the number of Kobbie minutes he plays. (Ugarte looks like a player who can play next to Kobbie but not instead of him.) I guess it's unlikely we could do a deal, and Lavia started Chelsea's opener against City, but they have a lot of money tied up in Fernandez and Caicedo, and Maresca brought Dewsbury-Hall with him from Leicester.

Are they really on that much? I keep being told Chelsea aren’t offering big wages to players. Though it may be that their up limit isn’t that high but they’re paying bog money to the 40 children they’re trafficking.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
A good number of them appear to be on fairly sensible wages. Some of them really aren’t. And then there’s the squad size multiplier to apply…
Beyond the initial outlay and keeping players happy (already failing there, clearly), I think the problems they’re most likely to have with the model are in recouping decent fees given the future wage obligations they’ve created and systemic need to sell players to support, which every club is going to know about and leverage (why would anyone pay £40m for Chukky, for example?), and their continuing need to sell their best homegrown players, which is going to shaft them in various ways and pess the fans off no end.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
They somehow seem to keep managing to get decent fees. If Ipswich do stay up our net spend this summer will be about £40/50m.
If we sell any 2 of chillwell, lukaku, kepa, sterling we may even post a profit this season.
I thought like you did, surely buying players meaning you have to sell would weaken the position, but it doesn't seem to be.

I read Palmer signed for Chelsea on about £60k a week until he just signed a new deal, still only on £130k.

Tbf they’ve been managing to get decent fees for a lot of their players. But the longer they stay in this mess, the worse their bargaining position gets and the worse the reputations of the players and the club become when it comes to sales - as we’ve seen with United.

Today's news:
"Porto have completed the signing of Atletico Madrid striker Samu Omorodion for €15million (£12.7m; $16.8m) — just weeks after his proposed €40million move to Chelsea collapsed."
