Derby County 3 - 0 Bristol City

DERBY COUNTY v BRISTOL CITY Championship #4

Saturday 31st August 2024, 1500 Pride Park, Derby

Have a quick window of roaming data, so will rattle this off.

Was it really THAT bad at Barrow? I missed a lot of the pain as I was otherwise engaged filling in my pre-registration for access to tickets for Oasis.

Well, what I don’t know won’t hurt me and I look forward to Bristol City - I might even make it to the game, with a fair wind and clear motorway(s) (brought the STs with me).

Still feel that expectations on social media and all the tourists that suddenly appeared at Middlesbrough should be tempered, all the ridiculous predictions of top 6 needs to be tamped down.

Team: Zetterström, Nyambe, Nelson, Cashin, Elder, Ozoh, Goudmijn, Adams, Jackson, Yates, Mendez-Laing (C)

Subs: Vickers (GK), Forsyth, Bradley, Barkhuizen, Collins, Thompson, Ward, Chirewa, Brown

Interesting comments from the Brizzle forum :
For 20 minutes it was like men against boys and I thought it would be a case of not would we win but by how much. As soon as Derby stopped trying to take us on and sat in we had no clue and never got around them or behind them and in a more attritional game we then lost all the midfield battles and second balls so that if any team was going to open up it was them - and did they. A victory for direct play, and especially them putting their foot through the ball whenever they got a sight of goal. We simply didn't do so, they did, and could easily have won the second half 6-0 it was that one sided.

Sykes was utterly dire, he is a feast or famine player for sure. Some games he can be fantastic but when he's not he's really awful. I also thought both the ex Derby players were especially nervous or subdued - was it the occasion?

....must admit I didn't think Birdy or JK38 did much to influence the game...what do you guys think ?

Adams still has one in each if his pockets.

Interesting that they play Knight deeper and Bird as a 10. Knight was very quiet but I thought maybe he got a tiny touch that helped our third goal defeat their keeper so maybe he’s still a Ram at heart. I thought Bird took up good positions and looked sharp but once Warne instructed Ozoh to move forward a few yards the lines of supply were generally snuffed out. The physical presence of Adams and Ozoh must be incredibly intimidating to an opponent. They would need to have great ability to compensate for the mis-match in power and strength, and on yesterday’s evidence at least Bird and Knight are not at that level.

Once our midfield was reorganised the Brizzle midfield stood no chance. Ebou and Ozoh were totally dominant with Kenzo all class. Bird and Knight won't face that combo every week.

Try Bristol Live Football Sport and read the equivalent of Leigh Curtis - an amazing in depth analysis of the game, mainly re Brizzle of course but with some very complimentary comments about Derby. Sorry I could not find the link.

Ozoh's deserved plaudits had me thinking, we're unable to keep this player for another season unfortunately ( and must hope and pray Crystal Palace do not opt to recall him) but should we not have a young player to be an understudy to Ozoh's quality?

Thomson would ideally benefit learning from Ozoh but I can't help but think given his frame and structure Fornah's game could improve from watching and studying Ozoh close up.

In other news, Louie Watson, remember him ( I'd totally forgotten he existed until I saw the article) has had his contract terminated at Luton Town. Last played for Oxford United on loan and most likely will be returning to L1 to seek pastures new. Could have been a Derby regular had he stayed.

Didn't listen to all of the RD programme this evening but I do agree the international break has come at the wrong time. Would have been great to face Cardiff this weekend after that win. But it gives us the opportunity to get the new recruits and squad to gel, work on our pattern of play and develop.

Are we going to see Nat Phillips in the first team line up for our next match or will he have to be patient?

I just read this on another website. It's how a Cardiff fan views their next fixture (against us)...
