Captains

McNeil, McStay, Brown, McGregor. Apologies firstly if I missing many good captains between McNeil and McStay but my age doesnโ€™t remember them. My point being is McGregor getting close to eclipsing them? I honestly think in the modern game he is the best actual footballer, and honestly a superb captain, thoughts ? And thoughts do captains matter?

Danny McGrain man. By far the best footballer to captain the club. Not even close.

This.

Another agreement that in my lifetime he was the best footballer to captain the club.

The best captain is a different question, however. One I'd struggle to answer because you can only go from second hand accounts about the on and off-field qualities required.

Nope as great as Danny was Kenny Dalglish was by far the best footballer to captain Celtic in my lifetime ,in fact Kennys the best footballer Celtic have had in my lifetime

Beat me to it. Huge fan of McGrain, but the best footballer to captain us has to be King Kenny (75-76 season).

Best captain is a different argument. Hard to look past McNeill on that TBH.

All about opinions but Danny was the best in the world in his position for a number of years. Dalglish was never that.

I never seen Dalglish play. I only have fleeting memories of McGrain playing at the very end of his career as I was only in my formative years of watching football. Ask my dad, uncles etc and they always raved about McGrain

I went to a Q&A with alex Ferguson a few years back and he talked about Souness as the epitome of a captain. I only seen Souness play in his latter years at Rangers so never seen him at his peak but Ferguson talked about how Souness could tell when a team mate was struggling and knew how to subtly get them back in the game, get the past whatever mistakes they were making but never made a big deal out of it.

I can see a lot of that in McGregor. I loved Scott Brown but as a technical player he was good but not top.

When I think of a top captain it is not just about their ability as a player (which has to be at the top of the team) but also their ability to lead, to get the best out of players around them and to be a presence on the pitch that opponents do not want to go up against.

In my lifetime I can think of a few in the UK
Roy Keane
Steven Gerard
Patrick Viera
John Terry

If we looked at other top sides in my lifetime then
Carlos Puyol
Sergio Ramos
Lothar Matthaus
Paolo Maldini
Dunga

They hit all of the requirments

A good captain can definitely make a difference, and McGregor is a good captain. Seems to have unwavering confidence in the ability of his team but not the ego that often goes with it. He has, like Tav has for us, the individual ability to make a difference in difficult games, but unlike Tav he also seems to be able to inspire the others around him to do likewise. That's the key difference between a good individual performer and a good captain IMO.
