Heard this described as the game nobody wanted. Kinda felt like that myself when the draw was made but surely this is a chance for squad players to get a start and make an impression. With our only victory thus far coming in this competition there has to be an opportunity to put doubts in the coaches mind over his selections. With the very notable exception of the Chelsea game we've not been terrible but results haven't come.
Progression in this competition would be welcome too, trouble is it's difficult at the moment to know whether it would be a distraction from a relegation battle. One things for sure 4 across the back is most likely given we've only got one fit centre back.
Doyle, Bueno, R Gomes, Sarabia, Forbs, Hwang, Cundle, Lima, Bentley, Guedes, Doherty must all be pushing for a start, quite how you fashion a starting line up from that lot though I really don't know. Doc CB, Gomes and Lima full backs perhaps, Doyle and Cundle in the middle, loads of wingers and no centre forward? Worth a try, though centre forward and no wingers didn't go too well at the weekend.
How Brighton line up and the strength of their starters will probably determine the strength of our chances of winning this. Should they make fewer than five changes from the weekend they'll win.
Fingers crossed for a high tempo energetic performance. I've been told I'm going to be watching the final episode of Celebrity Race Across the World, Kelly Brooke's in it so it ain't all bad, so enjoy the game, UTW.

Thought Guedes has done well in both the Carabao Cup games and his whole attitude seems totally different to his first spell in the team. Personally I’d select him in the Premier League ahead of Hwang, Sarabia or Bellegarde

My choice for the Villa game would be;
Johnstone
Semedo, Mosquera, Dawson, Ait Nouri
Joao, Andre
Guedes, Lemina, Cunha
Strand Larsen

Thought you had 12 on the pitch, took me too long to realise “Strand Larsen” is one player. Been a long week!

I understand the clamour for 3 CBs but I still think with Andre protecting the back four we could start to see clean sheets if we can just get the basics of defending correct. We're not effectively covering space nor are we being aggressive enough. We seem to be caught in the middle allowing players to drift across the edge of the box in to space to pick us off. Twice last night, once on Saturday.
Could be a case to go with Doyle over Lemina, maybe not away at Villa though. Maybe at Brentford?

Certainly think it would be a bit sad to play 5 at the back and 3 defensive midfield players. Be nice to see us attack occasionally.

In my system the width would come from Semedo and RAN, who are both better suited to the wing back role and would allow us to attack occasionally.
Lemina played ahead of Gomes and Andre which is why he was on hand to score our goal, so is not solely a “defensive midfielder” anyway.
I’ve watch Villa quite a bit recently and make no mistake, if we defend like we have been recently they will tear us a new one on Saturday. None of our centre backs are suited to playing in a back four.
All in all you don’t really understand what you’re watching
