Derby County 2 - 3 Norwich City

DERBY COUNTY v NORWICH CITY Championship #7

Saturday 27th September 2024, 1230 Pride Park

That's 12.30pm....twelve thirty....stupid o'clock.....which is two and half hours earlier for Fin, Igor, Chicago and Dixie....cannot work it out.

Saturday at Pride Park sees the return of an old stalwart who will take his seat in the South West Upper complete with his oxygen tank after being shipped in by fans of the canary variety - Be good to see you Ang......

WE didn't expect to get anything v Sheffield Utd and we didn't but such are the fine margins, we lost to a very good free-kick (was it actually a foul? ) in a game which could have petered out into a 0-0.

Norwich, believe it or not are one point below us and look strong. Again to coin a cliche, they will be there or thereabouts. For the most part when our paths cross, they provide us with good opposition.
Callum Elder will be out for 3/4 games which is a pity, as he was starting to really assert himself but there may be a place for Kane Wilson on Saturday for a welcome return.

Team: Zetterstrm; Nyambe, Nelson, Cashin, Forsyth; Osborn, Adams, Goudmijn, Jackson, Mendez-Laing (C), Yates

Subs: Vickers, Wilson, Bradley, Collins, Phillips, Harness, Blackett-Taylor, Chirewa, Brown

Vidal is, as ever measured and wise. That said, a game in which 3 of the goals should not have counted is a nonsense. Just have a penalty shoot-out if that is to be the standard of officiating.

Hopefully not with that linesman deciding whether they cross the line

He'd only give a goal if the ball ended-up in Alvo Park.

I must admit I've not watched any VAR matches. Do we think it would be an advantage or disadvantage over a season ?

The thing with Var Terry is that if it works in your favour it's fine but if it does not then it's an absolute pain. I suppose the good and bad results should even out over a season but then that is said about non-VAR matches.

I dislike it because if a "goal" is scored then everyone wants to know almost immediately if it will be allowed to stand. There's nothing like an immediate goal celebration. But when you watch a Prem game and often have to wait several minutes before the Var makes his decision, what an anticlimax when it finally arrives! At present the technology is not good enough for any situations other than whether or not the ball has crossed the line for a goal (or not) and of course the sort of thing leading to Norwich's first "goal". So much still depends on the opinion of the VAR so are we really any better off? Prior to VAR anyone could be left gnashing teeth over decisions but that was accepted as part and parcel of the game. At least excitement levels were not interrupted. VAR is to a large extent taking responsibility away from the usual officials so maybe that leads to less on-field competence. But when offside is given by the VAR (after several minutes) for a fraction of a centimeter what a farce!

I would prefer to remain VARless unless the technology is substantially improved and meanwhile officials need to improve. On the other hand villifying them for errors is counter-productive.

We had a dose of VAR against us very early on. Bryson scored a beauty in an FA Cup game away at Southampton, but it was adjudged to be offside by a toenail.

Im guessing 2019 or early 2020 (before Covid).

Dont think we'll ever reach a concensus about the value of var.
I dont think that the ball being in or out of play should be considered as a subjective decision, its black or white.
We have goal line technology in the Championship, which is transmitted almost instantly to the ref. Surely we can extend this to cover the whole of the line from corner flag to corner flag ?
Tennis & cricket have used hawkeye for years, so the technology exists and with the advent of AI, further improvements will emerge.
Regarding var, I seem to remember that it was used pretty rapidly in the Euros (apart from when a certain UK arbiter was in charge).
I just know that, for the sake of my health, I need to avoid episodes of extreme & obvious injustice like we saw on Sat.

PS Excellent debate on the Moan In with Malcolm C this eve. Worth listening on catch-up.

Hmmmm...
I think that "was it a foul" is a subjective decision...if the ball is out of play it's simply NOT subjective is it.
I agree if we have the technology for a ball crossing the goal line then surely it can be extended.
But from what I've heard about VAR it takes the spontaneity out of the game....so it's a no from me.

Thought that was what I implied 🤔
In any case, I agree.
