Matthijs dier Ligt

I just wanna go on record and say I think the signing is gonna be a disaster. We’ve signed some duds over the years but he for me is another Lindelof and just useless and slow with no redeeming features other than an ability to be a threat from set pieces.. I’d rather Maguire in defence than him and that’s saying something as Maguire isn’t good enough either (and I actually rate him as arguably our best CB).

Maz was a good signing, well done Ineos. But Dier Ligt is going to be a millstone around our necks. Bookmark this and laugh at me in 6 months if I’m wrong but I doubt I will be as we’re seeing why Bayern were more than happy to bin him off.

Only a few games in, but still

Half of that xG conceded is from the Spurs game (seriously).

It has skewed the figures somewhat.

You'd take RB's and LB's over him? AND Dragusin who I doubt you've watched much.

Hmmm.

what rbs and lbs? u mean the cbs playing at rb and lb? yes. And Dragusin, did you miss the euros? pretty impressed with him for Romania myself..

Yes, that's what happens with small sample sizes, but to be bottom two for two different metrics... and we've not really had that tough a start in terms of fixtures. No Arsenal or City, and the two best teams (on paper) that we faced were at OT.

OK, but according to FBref, we’re currently 15th in xG against with 10.8. Spurs racked up an xG in the weekend’s game of 4.7. Prior to that we had an xG against of 6.1.

*If* (yes, I know) the Spurs game had been even a little more representative of the season so far, we’d be very comfortably in the top half of xG against. Even if we’d just “had an off day” rather than a complete meltdown, by to-date season standards, we’d be looking at a completely different picture.

Spurs had no fewer than 24 shots against us at the weekend; yet we’re still ninth in shots against. Again, a slightly more representative weekend, and we’d be top five there. (We’ve conceded a total of 73; Villa, in fifth, have conceded 64.)

I wouldn’t put too much weight in the figures at this stage in the season, particularly with such a statistically outlying game as the one at the weekend in the mix. They can be spun after seven or so games how people like: our xG for before the weekend was right up there; we had great metrics in possession, and had kept it relatively very tight at the back.

The concerns are better shaped by the eye test at this point in the season, IMO, which says that we looked as good as we have at any point under ETH against Palace, and as bad as we have at any point under ETH against Spurs. People can draw their own conclusions from that

Everyone is slating De ligt for last night's performance and saying it was "only" against Porto, like he did s*** against a s*** team, but he was up against Omicron who almost came to Chelsea so he can't be that s***. I bet the media darlings Saliba and VVD would struggle against him.

not sure "almost came to chelsea" is any sort of benchmark of quality,

Letting ANY striker get across you at the front post is a failure of the CB. That's CB defensive basics!
