Hurricane Milton

Looks like an absolute beast of a storm headed towards Florida. Climate change is showing its teeth and sadly instead of embracing the challenge a huge swathe of Americans are burying their heads in the sand and blaming the government and cloud seeding etc.

I wonder just how many of these superstorms it will take before the West take real action on climate change. Imagine how hard it will be to get any insurance cover in places like Florida in years to come? I’ll become uninhabitable at some point.

Climate changeThis supposed super storm wouldn't be on the top 100 worst hurricanes of all time! Infact there is only 1 recent hurricane that registers anywhere near the top (Katrina). As someone who lived for many years in Florida and still has family there, you will always be able to purchase affordable hurricane insurance. OP has to be the biggest drama queen ...ever.

What's funny about climate change?
The hurricanes and tornados aren't stronger nessisarily just more frequent.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Nothing, however there is zero link to tropical cyclones. Infact, research says the opposite about frequency of storms compared to centuries ago. Technology to measure the strength of storms didn't exist way back either so we've no idea if intensity is increasing.

Is this storm REALLY down to climate change? I feel like Florida is either hit by a tornado, hurricane or earthquake every year. I read they have been hit by over 500 hurricanes alone since the 1850s.

I was in Tampa for the hurricane a few years ago. We went for a drive in it, no biggy, was only a cat 1 though.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

The predicted sea surge in Tampa Bay for this one is 10-15ft, which is pretty massive.

The amount of destruction it wreaks will depend on several other factors apart from the amount if energy itself. Where exactly it makes landfall and from what angle can both be major factors.

A few years ago, the city of Tacloban, in the south-eastern Philippines, was hit by the eye-wall of a similar-sized super-typhoon. The city is located in a very narrow strait between two islands, and the storm hit from just the right angle for the typhoon to funnel through the strait with sustained wind speeds in excess of 300km/h - basically a wall of wind travelling at the speed of a formula 1 car.

But it wasn't the wind that was the most damaging - it was the amount of surface water that the winds lifted up in front of them. The airport terminal building was wiped out by a 5m sea surge and 90% of the city's buildings were either damaged or destroyed.

In the case of Tampa, which sits at the back of the bay, the flooding can be very significant if the storm arrives from an angle that funnels water right into the bay. Though looking at the map, I don't think I'd want to be anywhere near Sarasota either.
