Having watched Paul mersons documentary on bbc one a few years ago it’s clear he wasted so much of his life and football career, imagine dropping down a division during your peak years and missing out on winning the double. His transfer to boro has to be the most bizarre and dumbest move in the history of English football, he uses addiction as an excuse for leaving arsenal to join boro, he is good on strictly though.

Merson was shown the door by Wenger/Dein.
====
He turned down a 2 year contract to stay.

Low balled.

proper low balled, played in just about every single game the season prior and the new contract he was offered was not inline with other players of equal standing in the squad. Middlesboro offered him the deal that he should have gotten at Arsenal (in line with the other players of the same importance with the Gunners)

Merson was not a proper winger, not a no.10, not a no.8. Look at the players we were attracting at the time, Dennis, Overmars, Davids etc. He was just not at that level. I compare ESR to him a lot. Add the extra baggage, and it was the right time to push him out.

Merson may not be the brightest individual academically, but his persistence in battling addiction and his desire to continue his career are to be applauded imo.
A career in the public eye, battling addiction, is worth of praise.

Fair enough to say he battled his demons and came through. But he was the one who put himself in that position in the first place and frankly didn't achieve to his full potential. Like Gazza wasted talent.

Of course. And his earnings and fame are arguably what gave him the platform for recovering and moving on with his life.
I still think it’s worthy of praise though, as it could very easily have gone the other way. Particularly given that Merson played in an era with a lot of less support for this type of thing.

I can hardly understand a word he says and what I can understand is usually bollox.
I doubt he would get so much work if he didn't have his addictions and a strong support team.

That’s a really nice way to describe someone with a history of serious mental health and addiction issues. But then again you’re an absolute caaant so…..
