Should UK pay reparations?

At the Commonwealth summit in Samoa, the UK said it won’t raise the issue of slavery reparations, but they’re open to talking about it if others do. PM Keir Starmer and King Charles will be there, and Starmer’s team confirmed that reparations and apologies aren’t part of their plans. However, Caribbean nations in CARICOM want to push for reparations, asking for aspects like apologies and education support, not just cash. The debate on reparations is growing, with both supporters and critics. Figures being circulated suggest reparations being sought is in the region of 200bn pounds.

Notable reparations:
- Court ordered Canada pay CA$23 billion to Indigenous residential school survivors.

- U.S. slavery reparations proposals suggest up to $12 trillion, but no payments have been made yet.

- Germany continues to pay billions of dollars to Israel to compensates Holocaust survivors.

- The U.S. paid $20,000 to each Japanese-American interned during WWII (120,000 persons of Japanese ancestry lived on the US mainland, mostly along the Pacific Coast)

If the U.K, US and Germany paid reparations for all their misdoings over the last century, they would be a 4th world country and a new word would have to be created to describe their overwhelming debts.

Wonder how much the Muslim world pays in reparations given the absolutely huge number of slaves processed?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I've visited Stonetown Cathedral in Zanzibar.

The British defeated the Arab slave traders, released the slaves, built a cathedral on the site of the now defunct slave market and made sure the altar was on the same spot as where the Whipping Post was.

All that was over a century ago but it was a proactive way of making ammends in some small way.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Slavery, regardless of who perpetrates it, is highly abhorrent. Throughout various periods of the Islamic empires, particularly the Ottoman and Mughal Empires, slavery was a significant feature; in fact, Islamic law permits the capture of enemies as slaves. It's important to note that slavery was not exclusive to Western civilisation. While the British defeated Arab slave traders, this does not absolve them of their participation in the slave trade.

ALL participants in the slave trade should acknowledge their role and seek to repair the historical damage.

only in parts of Africa today is there still slavery

all participants in the historical slave trade died centuries ago

what are they meant to repair, they're dead

nobody blames modern day Germans born after WWII for the things that happened in that war, which is only a few generations back

how can you expect people living now to have some sort of guilt or responsibility for things that happened centuries ago
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The responsibility for past social and economic inequalities rests with the descendants; that's how reparations work. Whether we like it or not, the billions or trillions gained from the trade continue to benefit our society today.

Britain doesn't pretend it had no part in it, neither is it still openly practiced in this country.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Maybe not openly but modern day slavery, exploitation, social and economic inequalities? 😏

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Definitely, it's the modern scourge.

In India, society is stratified along religious and caste lines, which creates deep inequalities. Depending on one’s caste, job opportunities can be severely restricted, those from lower castes are often limited to menial work, like serving as domestic workers. This inequality leads to abuse, including trafficking, which is especially evident in countries with high levels of poverty.
