We’re rewatching the Simpsons as doing a Disney + binge and quite honestly I’m blown away by how perfect it is 30+ years later and how well judged the jokes were and how they still hold up.
I might even be hyperbolic and say it’s the best season of TV ever made as every episode is rich in zingers and holds a mirror to society that no show has been able to do as well before or since.
Thats my opinion at least. What are your favourite seasons/episodes of the Simpsons? Or what in your opinion is the best season/series of TV of all time?

This is a good visualisation showing episodes/seasons by rating. Hard to disagree with. Good old Grimey at the top of the episode ratings, and rightly so.

s3-8 were just amazing... I think Conan O'Brien had a big hand in that golden period.
The monorail episode will always be my favourite.
Btw - I also binged s1-15 when I got Disney+ and was amazed at how many jokes Marge has... She's now one of my favourite characters.

14 episodes in total a 7.5 rating or below in the first 9 seasons. Then more than that in just season 11 alone.
That's brutal.
I've always said season 10 is about the cut off point for The Simpsons and that table more or less shows it.

I'm not a 'I know all the names of the episodes' type fan, but I have to agree, it is one of the best (if not the best) comedy series ever made that still feels funnier than ever. I think it obviously benefits from being a 'cartoon', which gives it a bit more leeway than real-life characters etc, but it still consistently hits the mark.
Off the top my head I love the baseball ringers episode, and the one of Homer on the skateboard jumping over Springfield gorge - the ambulance scene after, just pure genius

You can actually pinpoint the second when the Simpsons rips in half: Season 9, episode 2. When Armin Tamzarian walks in. From that moment, The Simpsons was doomed.

The reality is that there is a direct correlation between Homer's personality and the quality of season. He goes from angry, to dopey (peak), to a bit cocky and smart arrrse. To help me express my viewpoint, I have asked AI to expand on my theory.
Early Seasons (1-3):
Angry and Grumpy: In the initial seasons, Homer was portrayed as a more traditional, grumpy father figure, somewhat akin to Walter Matthau. He was often angry and frustrated, particularly with Bart’s antics.
Middle Seasons (4-10):
Dopey and Lovable: As the show progressed, Homer became more dopey and endearing. His character shifted towards being more naive and childlike, often getting into ridiculous situations due to his lack of common sense. This period solidified many of his iconic traits, such as his love for donuts and beer, and his catchphrase “D’oh!”.
Later Seasons (11-20):
Exaggerated and Absurd: Homer’s personality became more exaggerated, with his stupidity and impulsiveness often reaching new heights. This era saw him getting involved in increasingly outlandish scenarios, sometimes bordering on the absurd.
Recent Seasons (21-Present):
Cocky and Self-Aware: In the more recent seasons, Homer has shown a mix of his previous traits but with a more self-aware and sometimes cocky attitude. The writers have played with his character, making him more reflective at times, while still maintaining his core dopey charm.
I feel that the evolution of the personality of Homer is the key factor in the evolution of The Simpsons overall. The ratings reflect this.

I've not watched The Simpsons in years but was a huge fan of the golden era. So many great episodes but the one that stands out for me is Homer the Great.

Homer's Triple Bypass is my favourite, think it's the first one I watched too. Didn't have Sky so my mate with Sky videoed them for me.
"People who look like things"
"Young Homer is going to make me a millionaire"
"Bed goes up, bed goes down"
