No really, did they miss out on some sort of technicality? I remember reading an article that the number of teams in each group are uneven so they're determining the qualifying using some arbitrary formula.

They thought that a draw would be enough to see them through so played for the draw only for someone to win and go above them.

niger qualified by virtue of having a better head to head, it seems South Africa did their sums wrong and thought a draw was enough, when it wasn't.

Well then they should learn to bloody well count! Frankly I don't buy this playing for a draw nonsense - you should always go for the win because either way the other team will make you work.
