An Insipid Performance but Job Done Again

The Girona game was another one of those games where, despite getting the win, we really didn’t look great. The kind of performance that makes you feel like we were in second gear the whole match. While the result is always the most important thing, there’s no ignoring that we need to be better in the final third - Nunez was average again, missing key chances and Salah was fairly anonymous - although he can be forgiven!

Our defence, on the other hand, was solid as ever. Van Dijk and Gomez were excellent, we really are seeing better from Gomez although he gets rinsed once almost every game. There wasn’t really a point where Girona looked like they were going to break us down. However, we can’t always rely on the backline to bail us out, especially when we’re lacking the cutting edge up front.

And speaking of the attack it was very disjointed. We had plenty of possession but struggled to create anything meaningful. Nunez’s pace was a threat at times, but the build-up play lacked fluidity. In games like last night, we still find it difficult to turn possession into goals, and that’s something that needs fixing sooner rather than later.

Looking ahead to January, it’s clear that we need some reinforcements. A true CDM is a must, as we can’t keep expecting Grav to play every game. We need someone who can control the midfield and provide more depth, especially as the season gets into the important period.

We also need to address the centre-back situation. VVD, Gomez (at his best), and Konaté are all brilliant, but a fourth reliable centre-back would help with rotation and ensure we’re not overburdening anyone. Fresh legs are going to be vital over the coming months, and Quansah still needs to be sheltered wherever possible.

And finally, the striker position. My thoughts on Nunez are well known, and we know Jota is more than capable, but we’re missing that reliable, consistent scorer who can stay fit. A centre-forward who can convert chances on a regular basis would really take the pressure off the others and mean we have an outlet for when Salah has an off night.

I don't expect all three positions to be addressed, for the record.

At the end of the day, we got the job done in Catalonia, but we need to be much sharper moving forward. With the right additions in January, we really can kick on in 2025 and solidify the great start we've made.

By the way, never a penalty in my mind, we got exceptionally lucky there.

Midweek game innit. No point going all out when in such a good position.

How is that not a penalty for trying out loud?

Good article Fred

Agree with most of it and yes, the penalty was exceptionally soft, but I’ll take it.

We just keep winning, it’s kinda weird.

You said "despite getting the win, we really didn’t look great".
I'd prefer to say we really didn’t look great but still got the win.
