The Point of a Captain

What is the point? I ask, as if you just give it to the oldest, most experienced guy, or to just keep them happy, then it is just ceremonial. I would argue that our Captain has been ceremonial for as long as I can remember.

Hugo, Kane, son.

I think we need to buy a Captain. This person doesn't need to be the best player, but they need strength of character. For me, a central midfielder or Centre Back who isn't going to take any rubbish from anyone.

I know this man probably doesn't exist, but someone like a Keane, Bruce, Gerrard, etc

I want rows on the pitch about why that cross came in or why did you lose your man.

At Rangers, Doggie just let a cross come in and he didn't even raise a leg to try to stop it. Not a word tom anyone.

The only balla kin t I have sent is Vicario having a go a Bergs, which I had an issue with as he is quite as a mouse to Romero etc.

I would love suggestions of who we could buy to fill this role.

Cheers

You can’t really just buy a captain, they need the respect of the dressing room otherwise they are just a moaning khunt.

You look at City, if KDB says something the rest are listening, I don’t care if he is captain or not, they just will because he has walked the walk as well as talking the talk.

VVD and Salah at Liverpool - Allison as well, players are listening to these guys.

Arsenal don’t really have anyone, it’s partly why they never quite get over the line - you know they have a schitt result in them.

Chelsea don’t have it, they are just riding the crest of a wave at the moment. They’ll win the euro mick as they are ridiculously overpowered in that comp, but won’t haul Liverpool in for the title.

Spurs and United - no leader and collectively no backbone.

The lad i could see developing into that player is Archie Gray, just something about this guy, he shys away from nothing and plays like he is 28 not 18

Archie gray has got 10 years of development before anyone could consider him a "captain".
The right player for the job, right now, is SON.
And if Son is out, then Romero.
Or Maddison.
Those are the options .

Nope, he doesn't act like the captain we need.

The point of a captain is so much more than during a match. Setting the tone and culture in the dressing room and training pitch, making sure new players and young players are not isolated and yeah, being a trusted 2-way conduit to the manager. Ideally a home grown academy graduate with 100s games under their belt and ideally a CDM or CB - positions that by their very nature seldom make mistakes for it to be cast up. Keepers are too far from the action, forwards by the nature of that position take risks and make mistakes. Above all it has to be someone you can't fault for lack of effort.

Very good description of a Captain

Me too. Obviously soon now, but depending on your age you might remember Will Carling being made England Rugby Captain at 22

Yeah, it’s probably too early at this point, but a couple of years from now - the boy is more composed than most our squad. Prior to Thursday night he had reclaimed possession more than any other player in the Europa league so far - he is special, in a couple of years people will be talking about that £40m fee as an absolute bargain

Surely Captains are made not bought?

Yeah I’d say so too.

Kulu ticks the boxes out of current crop

Can’t stand Maddison being anywhere near it …..too inconsistent

Captains should at least be getting involved in games ….even if having an off game the drive to be involved should be there and Maddison doesn’t have it ….passenger when having an off day

I’m convinced Romero doesn’t want to be here ……we don’t let valuable players get this close to contracts running down without offering new ones , I reckon he has said no

I don't think we currently have one. We need someone who will make the others rise. I like Kulu, but not him, wrong position.

Midfield general. Disagree that you can't buy one in. Like management in other walks of life, you don't always promote from within.

Who is the toughest son of a b in CM out there at the moment?

Footballers not made like that anymore, all soft privileged weak individuals that don't basically give a fark
