I often wonder what exactly happened to Martinelli that has made him extremely unconfident, ineffective and absolutely terrible every time he gets onto the pitch.
His speed (which was his greatest strength) has become nonexistent. He just cannot use his speed to beat anyone. He got owned by old man Ashley Young. He was never a dribbler but he then had the ability to beat his man. But now his pace has done nothing for him.
Martinelli has really really fallen. In my opinion, he is easily Arsenal's worst player of the season. And I just surprised that he has become this limited as an outlet. I can easily name ten LWs in the EPL much better than him.
So I have to ask, what has caused Martinelli to become so bad at football?
What happened to Martinelli?

Didn’t he score a good goal at Brentford? Also scored at Chelsea and I’m sure a few more.

Yeah. He hasn't been at his best of 2 seasons ago, not close - but the OP is waaaaaay over the top with the criticism and they offer very little more than sensationalism more expected from a rival fan.

The truth is, the team is set up to benefit the right side and most attacks come down that side.
Martinelli has also suffered from 18 months of not having a settled left back and natural #8 to work with. The same OP highlighted Trossard for criticism with his last article - asking why he has lost form. Anyone capable of critical thinking would see a link here!!
In terms of our starters, Odegaard has been very poor by his standards. Injury hasn't helped, but both before and after that he has struggled quite badly.
Martinelli wasn't great yesterday, but the team had already become second best in the game before he came on. A midfield 3 of DMs helped no-one up front and even when Ode came on, Ode barely had a touch (66% pass success rate as well)

Got to agree Odegaard been shocking imo this season. Yeh hes been neat and tidy in games but dont think hes had any end product at all this season.
Im sure hes got 1 goals this season and that was from the penalty spot.

I will always appreciate a response that is well thought out and quite cerebral.
Your opinions are well received and I have to agree with most of what you have said.
Maybe i have been too critical of Martinelli. It is probably because he seems to be wasting his potential. While other LWs have gradually moved their games and skill set to the next level (for example, Anthony Gordon and Ademola Lookman), Martinelli has actually regressed. It is quite disappointing to watch.

Arteta has coached the instinctive attacking player out of him. He now needs time to think instead of going on instinct.

The change of tactics to a more conservative style of play hasn't benefitted Martinelli at his best he's a chaos player where he can play off the cuff. That being said he's not trained on. I do think it's coming to a crunch point where it's a fair question to say is he the one to help us towards winning the league.

I don't know if I'd say "I can easily name ten LWs in the EPL much better than him", but I'd agree he's the worst of the players in our squad who are regular starters, so the article isn't that far off. Martinelli's decision making is poor and he is not technically gifted. He had useful instinctive qualities in his ability to constantly attack the space behind the opposition (something no one else in our team does, as they like to get on the ball), offering us dynamism and found success there, but this has dried up as our build-up play has become more insipid.

Actually on further thought, yes, there are up to ten LWs in the PL better than him on evidence of the last season-and-half.

There are so may good wide players in PL we can go for. Martinelli is the best of the bad bunch (ex Saka) out wide we have. We are really poor up front & wide.
