Erling Haaland has signed a contract extension - for nine and a half years.Contract now runs until the end of 2034.
That certainly puts pay to the idea he'll inevitably move to Real at some point. And obviously important for City to secure their key asset. It feels like quite a risk to commit that long, though. In a PSR era, agility in squad management is useful. There's no sign that Haaland is going to decline any time soon. But there have been plenty of strikers who hit heights early in their careers and peak early. Burn-out from too many matches is increasingly an issue. And who knows which players get the freak injury that doesn't end their career but changes its trajectory (Shaw) or succumbs to a bowel condition (Fletcher).

Seems odd to give him such a long contract to me. As others have said, there is no guarantee that he won't pick up a serious injury. Even though recovery from something like an ACL injury is better than in the past, I'm not sure that you can ever be the same player again. We have seen how quickly a knee injury can result in the decline of a players' performance levels with the likes of Sanchez and Torres.
Haaland is a big lad and there will be a lot of stress on his knees.
Seems like a huge risk to give him a £250m contract when he could suffer a serious injury at any time.

Agreed. Seems a very bizarre decision from City.

Career ending injuries are pretty rare now. Even if he did pick up a serious but not career ending injury, I'd fancy him to come back and continue his levels while he's still in his 20's.
I don't blame City for the contract. He's pretty much the best striker in the world and you know it would have to take a career ending injury to stop him carrying on scoring bucket loads and breaking the records.

Yeah, especially if it is in phonetic English.

That's true, but on the flip side players' effectiveness dropping off a cliff in their late 20s is more common than it used to be, because football is more physically intense and involves more games than ever.

But say he turns to shiiit or just burns out in 5 years. He still has 4.5years @ 25m a year due to him.
Why 9.5, why not 5.or 6. It's not like they need to or will recover much fee from him aged 29,.but he'll still have t years left at that point.

The uncertainty has to be the likelihood of injury given his size, how he plays and the demands he places on his body. It doesn't have to be a career ender, it only has to be something that's likely to recurr or cause further injuries. For his build that could become a problem with the countless knee, ankle injuries out there - ACL, achillis, meniscus tear, knee cartilage damage. You're playing with injections and sheit. Plus, re-injuries take longer to recover from as well.

I think it’s to ensure he’s locked in with us for what will hopefully be his prime years (or we get an absolutely exorbitant fee for him). There’s very few players I’d do that for personally.
