***Beckham eyes United role***

The former England captain won a Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League Treble with the Old Trafford club in 1999.

But Beckham was sold to Real Madrid in 2003 after a reported breakdown in his relationship with United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Reports in France are currently linking the 36-year-old with a move to wealthy Paris St Germain as a player as he nears the end of his current contract with LA Galaxy.

But Beckham has never made any secret of his desire to one day go back
David Beckham would 'love' the opportunity to return to Manchester United as a sporting director.

to United and he would even be prepared to occupy a role behind the scenes.

Having watched former Real Madrid team-mate Zinedine Zidane take up a similar role at the Bernabeu, Beckham said with regard to United: "I'd love to do that.

"The best memory of my career came in 1999, no doubt, when Manchester United won the treble.

"In my opinion, no club can repeat that feat."

Say what you like about the man, he has always remembered and been synonymous with our great club. It was rather unfortunate he left under the dark circumstances but then again we may have never seen the Portuguese wonder-boy...I for one would love to see Becks back at Man United in some capacity...a very good ambassador to the game and always shines his United light wherever he goes

If I remember correctly it was VDS who has to palm it away unless it was heading straight for the back of the net akin to Scholesy against Villa....I remember that shot flew off his boot so hard the cameras couldn't keep up and the pace it went at I was looking for it in the back of the net

I guess they want a flagship player....I mean they already have good players like Menez, Pastore and Sakho.

Yeah not like they blew 40 mil on pastore or anything.

But Pastore is nowhere near as marketable as Beckham...I for one honestly don't understand the PSG link.

Beckham is a United legend and I'd love to see him involved with the club again. But does anyone believe he has the insights and subtle intellect you'd need from a 'sporting director' (unless this is a purely honorary title)?

Well, I don't think David is as dense as people would make you out to believe, but I guess I would have to do a bit of research to find out what that job entails

As far as I know, the job title doesn't exist at the moment at United. I don't know how much actual influence Zidane has at Real Madrid, but the job spec wouldn't have to be the same at United.

I agree that Beckham isn't as thick as is made out. He proved quite articulate in his various ambassadorial / captaincy roles later in his career (presumably after a bit of coaching). At the same time, I've never heard him say anything about football that suggested he's a very deep or astute thinker about the game.

Apparently this is what the role entails, basically an intermediate between the board and the Manager...not quite sure if SAF would need one of those as he and the Glaziers seem pretty cozy and have good comunication
