After seeing Robin Van Persie's great performances for Arsenal this and last season, and reading John's pointless articles bashing him for no reason, I decided to have a look around the top leagues in Europe (England, Spain, Italy, France, Portugal, Germany) to see if anybody has eclipsed the goal scoring form he has shown in the 2011 calender year. The list below shows who the most prolific strikers in Europe have been so far in 2011, with the goals they have scored for their respective countries in brackets.
Name | Goals |
Lionel Messi | 45 (3) |
Cristiano Ronaldo | 42 (5) |
Mario Gomez | 40 (7) |
Robin Van Persie | 34 (6) |
Falcao | 27 (4) |
Javier Hernandez | 27 (11) |
Oscar Cardozo | 27 (4) |
Sergio Aguero | 27 (4) |
Wayne Rooney | 27 (2) |
Karim Benzema | 26 (3) |
Kevin Gameiro | 26 (1) |
Antonio Di Natale | 24 (0) |
Giuseppe Rossi | 24 (3) |
David Villa | 23 (6) |
Edinson Cavani | 23 (2) |
Hulk | 22 (0) |
Roberto Soldado | 21 (0) |
Samuel Eto'o | 21 (0) |
Alvaro Negredo | 20 (0) |
Daniel Sturridge | 20 (4) |
Any surprises in there? To be honest I was surprised to see Gomez score the amount of goals he has scored and despite Rooney's poor 2010, his 2011 form has been pretty awesome, as has Herndandez's form for Mexico, and how Sturridge has not been called up to the senior England squad is beyond me! I was also shocked to see the world class duo of Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll would not make the list even if their goal tallies for 2011 were combined.
