Was it really that bad?

Didn't bother sitting up for this one tonight, had a bad feeling. Looking at the BBC match report and the stats, I was wondering did we really play that bad?

47% possession?

NO shots on target and only 3 off (WBA had 5 on target apparantly)

3 corners to their 8?

I know statistics don't always paint the correct picture but are they accruate in this case?

Also, was Herd's sending off correct?

Eck's got to go... and he should take Hutton with him. No way should that thug be wearing a Villa shirt! I'm not hugely enthusiastic about the Dunne/Collins duo in our defence, but in their way they're solid players, but not dirty ones. Hutton if he stays will become a byword for what Villa now stands for. And he sets a bad example. Herd, and other young players, need to learn to avoid doing the wrong stuff; is it now the case that Hutton is what they should aspire to?

As for the Herd sending off, think he had a raw deal. It would have been difficult for any official to see what actually happened, let alone judge if it was deliberate. I accept there was contact, but Herd looked as though he was focused on the play, not on the players on the ground behind him.

McParland - as a Baggies fan - I do agree Herd treatment was harsh and it was not a penalty so justice was served when we missed it. I am not even sure that Hutton's challenge was particularly malicious and Dowd got it right not to penalise the first one.

But Hutton did seem to under orders to unsettle Long and young Herd - I hope you will agree - needs to be reined in. This sort of play has not been like Villa in recent years and it is to be hoped that McLeish can find more imaginative ways to improve Villas football in future.

U2095 - trouble is Hutton's idea of unsettle is to clobber the opponent wherever possible. I think it was malicious, a lot worse than the incident he was yellow-carded for. I think Herd has potential; yes he does need to be spoken to, but will he?
